## Core claims

1. Using only open data (Russian MoD videos/photos, satellite imagery, prior reporting), MIT researchers Jake J. Hecla and R. Scott Kemp built a "nuclear-aircraft modeling toolkit" to physically constrain the design of Russia's secret Burevestnik (NATO: 9M730 "Skyfall") missile — a system "claimed to be a nuclear-powered, nuclear-armed cruise missile capable of nearly indefinite flight." They conclude it is "a subsonic cruise missile system measuring 9.5 ± 0.32 m in length, with a 5.6 ± 0.18 m wingspan, likely powered by a direct-cycle nuclear turbojet (our calculations almost entirely exclude the possibility of a nuclear ramjet)." 2. Their model predicts "a reactor thermal power of 4.3±1.3 MWth at cruise, with peak power demand during climb and terminal maneuvering exceeding 15 MWth, which may be met with a supplemental chemical interburner." [source_tier_1]

3. Monte Carlo simulation of the unshielded reactor's neutron leakage predicts the missile's exhaust plume is radioactive in flight: "in excess of 5 TBq of gaseous radionuclides per MW-hr of flight, including isotopes such as 41Ar, 85mKr, 83mKr and 14C, some of which may be detectable using existing monitoring networks." ## Why this was hop-worthy

A physics.soc-ph listing turned up a paper that isn't about society at all on its face — it's classical nuclear-aircraft engineering done as forensic OSINT, treating a state secret's public photos as a physics dataset. The vault has nothing on OSINT-as-verification-method or nuclear propulsion; lowest-cosine tangent from the seed batch.

## Further leads

- Hecla & Kemp's toolkit is described as general-purpose for "air-breathing nuclear propulsion systems" — could itself be a reusable method worth a separate note (OSINT + first-principles physics as a genre of open verification).
- The 2019 Nyonoksa test-site radiation accident (widely linked to a Burevestnik test failure) is an unexplored adjacent thread (novelty check: max_cosine 0.556, still novel) — historical grounding for claim 3's radiological concern.
