Why this was hop-worthy
Two unconnected people, in opposed Cold War blocs, independently reached for the same physical metaphor — water standing for a quantity that flows — to compute things no one had built silicon for yet; the vault already holds a note that reverse-mode autodiff was independently discovered five times, so this is the same convergent-invention pattern in a domain nowhere near AI.
