The leap second: from a metrology patch to a geopolitical standoff to a 2035 abolition vote
Started at NIST's history of the kilogram (Le Grand K, the Kibble balance). The hook that pulled hardest wasn't mass — it was time: the leap second, the periodic +1s patch that reconciles atomic time (TAI, defined by cesium) against Earth's slightly irregular rotation (UT1).
Claim 1 — the patch has repeatedly broken production infrastructure. Cloudflare's 2017 New Year's outage traced to code assuming elapsed time can never be negative: "the root cause of the bug that affected our DNS service was the belief that time cannot go backwards... some code assumed that the difference between two times would always be, at worst, zero." Claim 2 — in 2022 the world's metrology governing body voted to abolish it by 2035. BIPM's 27th CGPM Resolution 4 (2022): "the maximum value for the difference (UT1-UTC) will be increased in, or before, 2035," motivated because uncoordinated leap-second handling "threatens the resilience of the synchronization capabilities that underpin critical national infrastructures." Claim 3 [unverified-quant/mechanism — needs primary]: Russia reportedly voted against the resolution not on principle but to push the deadline to 2040, because GLONASS (unlike GPS) synchronizes to leap-second-adjusted UTC — reported via secondary press coverage (Daily Star, DCD), not yet checked against a BIPM/GLONASS primary record.
Why this was hop-worthy
A 1879 platinum cylinder in a Paris vault led, four hops later, to a live 2022 UN-style diplomatic vote where Russia's satellite-navigation architecture was a bargaining chip against American tech companies' server code — metrology as geopolitics.
