Simon and Newell's 1976 "Physical Symbol System Hypothesis" (the tenth ACM Turing Lecture, published as "Computer Science as Empirical Inquiry," CACM 19(3)) and their earlier GPS/Logic Theorist work rest on the same core move as satisficing: search for a heuristically "good enough" solution rather than an exhaustively optimal one — applied to machines and to human decision-makers by the same person, in the same intellectual arc.
