The vault already has a note on Lev Pontryagin doing topology blind, via spoken symbol-glosses his mother invented. A different hop surfaced the same man's other legacy: institutional power used to exclude.

Claim 1. Sergei Novikov (Fields Medalist, eyewitness) recounts that Pontryagin, one of 24 votes on the Soviet National Committee of Mathematicians, helped bar Grigory Margulis from traveling to the 1978 Helsinki ICM to receive his own Fields Medal, part of a KGB-linked antisemitic campaign inside Steklov, the Academy, and the IMU delegation. Pontryagin's own published reply, quoted by Novikov: "the vote vas 24:0, so my share of responsibility is 1/24 ... it was unanimous." Claim 2. The same exclusion — Moscow State's Mekh-mat used deliberately unsolvable "coffin problems" to fail Jewish applicants — fed a refusenik phenomenon: scientists fired after applying to emigrate kept working via underground apartment seminars, e.g. a mid-1970s Leningrad seminar (Taratuta's apartment, led by Granovskii) including Steklov-affiliated refusenik Abram Kagan. Why this was hop-worthy
