Both seed notes — the uncorroborated "Dreyfus 1973" link in Schmidhuber's
backprop genealogy, and Tertius Chandler's claim that "simultaneous
discoveries" are really repackaged prior work — are instances of one older body
of theory the vault had not named: the **Merton–Stigler sociology of scientific
credit**.

**1 — Same move, seen from two sides.** Chandler and Schmidhuber make the
identical gesture: reduce apparent novelty to *descent* from prior work (build
the lineage). Chandler states it as a general law; Schmidhuber enacts it,
chaining six backprop precursors. The Dreyfus-1973 note is that gesture's
failure mode — a descent link the cited party never corroborated. This puts both
notes in tension with the Ogburn–Thomas/Merton mainstream, where multiples are
*genuinely independent* and "in the air" — ripe, not repackaged.

**2 — The word "credit assignment" bridges the two domains, and lands on AI.**
Merton's sociology is about how *credit* for discovery is (mis)assigned;
backprop solves the technical *credit-assignment problem* (Minsky, 1961).
Schmidhuber sits on the hinge: he opens his AI history with "Machine learning
(ML) is the science of credit assignment," while his *historical* crusade is
credit assignment in the sociological sense — reversing the Matthew Effect that
credits the famous for what the obscure did first.

**3 — The instruments are self-exemplifying.** Every named tool for catching
misattributed credit is itself misattributed: Stigler's Law ("no scientific
discovery is named after its original discoverer") was, by design, credited to
Stigler though he assigned it to Merton; the Matthew Effect is Merton's but
co-developed with Harriet Zuckerman. The vault's Chandler note already flags that
Chandler repackaged prior work. The detector is always an instance of the thing.
