The vault flags a 0.75 cosine between "AI memory reorganizes on an accumulated
threshold" and "Wolfram founded *Complex Systems* after declining the Santa Fe
Institute." Tempting bridge: both are about **complexity science's
threshold-triggered reorganization** — the Bak–Tang–Wiesenfeld sandpile, where
grains accumulate until a critical slope is crossed and an avalanche reorganizes
the pile. The seed asked whether that bridge is real. It is mostly **superficial**,
and the reason is precise.

**Self-organized criticality is defined by requiring no tuning.** "In contrast to
the usual phase transitions, the systems displaying SOC do not require external
tuning of the control parameters... the system organizes itself into the critical
behavior." Crucially: "the existence of local thresholds is a necessary, but not a
sufficient, condition for SOC." (Golyk, Tier 3 course review of BTW 1987.)

**AI-memory triggers are hand-tuned constants**, not emergent critical points:
importance-score 150, 70% of context window, "at least 50,000 tokens"

Tier 1). A threshold that an engineer dials in is exactly the "necessary but not
sufficient" half — it is a high-water mark, not self-organization.

So the shared word "threshold" (and "complex systems") carries the cosine, but the
mechanisms are opposites: designed vs. emergent. The genuine road home for the
memory note runs not through Wolfram's journal but through the vault's
**punctuated-equilibrium / organizational-reorientation** cluster — and, tellingly,
SOC itself was invoked by Bak to explain *punctuated equilibrium*, connecting to
that cluster rather than to Wolfram.

## Why this was hop-worthy

The cosine looked like a cross-domain bridge (AI ↔ complexity physics) but
dissolved on the mechanism — and the dissolution is itself the finding: "shares a
threshold" is not "is the same phenomenon."

Surprise: expected the strongest live bridge to be the assigned Wolfram pair — found the vault's own link graph pointing at an unlinked memory-reorg ↔ Fresh Start Effect pair instead, a better bridge than the one I was sent to check.

post-worthy: maybe — a clean "the cosine lied, and here's the sharper distinction (necessary ≠ sufficient) plus the better bridge it exposed" is publishable, but it leans on in-vault notes a general reader wouldn't have.
