The **fresh-start effect** (individuals reset at temporal landmarks), Gersick's team **midpoint transition** (groups reorganize at the calendar halfway point to a deadline), and Berger & Pope's competitive **halftime deficit** effect are three faces of one idea: *a temporal landmark creates a reference point, and being below it triggers loss-aversion-driven effort.* The sports face is the one that got stress-tested — and largely evaporated.

**Claim 1 — the original effect.** In NBA data, teams "slightly behind at half-time are between 5.8 and 8.0 percentage points more likely to win the match than those that are slightly ahead." (source_url above, Tier 1) Berger & Pope attributed this to loss aversion: it is "regarded as one of the first studies to show that loss aversion is not limited to inexperienced subjects in low-stakes settings, but also affects the behavior of experts in a high-stakes professional environment."

**Claim 2 — the mechanism is shared.** "Research on goals as reference points shows that people who are slightly below their goal work harder than those who have reached or exceeded it, in a manner consistent with loss aversion." (Tier 1) This is the same engine the fresh-start effect runs on.

**Claim 3 — it doesn't replicate.** Extending to Australian football, American football, and rugby: "no evidence of such an effect for these three sports." For basketball, support survives "only… for NBA matches from the period analyzed in Berger and Pope (2011)" — not later NBA, not NCAA, not the WNBA. "High-powered meta-analyses across the different sports and competitions do not reject the null hypothesis." (Tier 1)

## Why this was hop-worthy
It bridges two unlinked vault clusters — individual fresh-start psychology and organizational/evolutionary punctuated equilibrium — through a shared reference-point mechanism, then turns the seed's own question (does the effect replicate?) back on a celebrated case and finds it fragile.
