The bridge between [[claim-canonic-deliverable-is-an-append-only-evidence-ledger]]
and [[claim-euv-mirror-advantage-is-tacit-know-how-not-patent]] is **real**, and
it is sharper than a flat "both involve tacit knowledge." The shared root is
Polanyi's paradox — *we know more than we can tell* — and the key move is that
**codification is the single hinge that governs both automation and imitation.**

Writing knowledge down as explicit rules or blueprints is exactly what lets a
machine execute it *and* what lets a rival reproduce it. So knowledge that
resists codification resists *both*. CANONIC cannot codify the slop-verdict into
a mechanical gate ([[claim-canonic-slop-is-a-verdict-of-domain-expertise]]), so
it cannot be automated — the verdict stays with human expert judgment, and the
system falls back to a codifiable *accountability* ledger. ASML/Zeiss cannot (or
need not) codify their mirror know-how into patents, so it cannot be copied by
Nikon/Canon or transferred under sanction — the tacit residue *is* the moat.

- **Automation leg** (Tier 1, Autor): "Tasks that have proved most vexing to
automate are those that demand flexibility, judgment and common sense — skills
that we understand only tacitly," whereas the automatable tasks "follow
explicit, codifiable procedures." Autor coined the name "Polanyi's paradox"
for exactly this. Note his gloss on the ML response: contemporary CS "seeks to
overcome Polanyi's paradox by building machines that learn from human examples"
  — the move CANONIC found could not render the slop verdict.
- **Imitation leg** (Tier 2, Reed & DeFillippi 1990, AMR): "Tacitness,
complexity, and specificity... generate causal ambiguity... and thus raise
barriers to imitation," where much success-relevant knowledge "is tacit,
meaning it is non-codifiable." This is the mechanism behind the EUV moat.

**The twist that makes the bridge non-superficial:** the *same* property —
non-codifiability — is an **obstacle** in the CANONIC case (you *want* to
mechanize the verdict and can't) and a **moat** in the EUV case (you're *glad*
rivals can't mechanize your skill). Two 2026 notes, opposite valence, one root.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> The resemblance is not "both mention tacit knowledge" — that would be a
> category, not a connection. The connection is that automation and imitation are
> the same act (executing codified knowledge) run by different actors: a machine
> vs. a competitor. The tacit dimension is the wall both hit. — Seek

## Why this was hop-worthy
It resolves a flagged unlinked pair (cosine 0.75) into a load-bearing structural
bridge with a named mechanism (codification) and an asymmetry (obstacle vs. moat)
neither note states on its own.

## Further leads
- Von Hippel's "sticky information" (cost of transferring information) as a
possible single unifier of the automation and imitation legs.
- Nelson & Winter, "replication of routines" — the firm-level tacit-transfer problem.
- Does CANONIC's accountability-ledger fallback have an EUV analogue (trade
secrecy is *also* the codifiable fallback when the patent route fails)?

## Hop chain

Hop 1 — Polanyi tacit knowledge (WebSearch: Grokipedia/New World Encyclopedia summaries), https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polanyi%27s_paradox
- Hook type: Cross-domain bridge (the connecting concept between an AI-governance note and a semiconductor-economics note)
- Hook: Both seed notes lean on "tacit" / "verdict of domain expertise"; Polanyi's *The Tacit Dimension* (1966) is the canonical frame for knowledge that resists explicit articulation.
- Why followed: To test whether one philosophical root actually covers both cases or only sounds like it does.
- Key findings: The strong/weak distinction (tacit knowledge *cannot* vs *is merely hard to* codify) is the exact axis both notes turn on.

Hop 2 — David Autor, "Polanyi's Paradox and the Shape of Employment Growth" (2014), https://economics.mit.edu/sites/default/files/publications/polanyis%20paradox%202014.pdf
- Hook type: The person behind the thing (+ lands on AI, Cali's home planet)
- Hook: Autor gave Polanyi's paradox its *name*, applying it to automation.
- Why followed: The automation framing is the CANONIC leg — non-codifiable → non-automatable.
- Key findings: Verbatim Tier-1 grounding that codifiable tasks automate and tacit tasks don't; plus his line that ML "seeks to overcome Polanyi's paradox by learning from examples" — precisely the mechanical gate CANONIC found could not render.

Hop 3 — Reed & DeFillippi, "Causal Ambiguity, Barriers to Imitation, and Sustainable Competitive Advantage" (AMR 1990), https://journals.aom.org/doi/10.5465/amr.1990.4308277
- Hook type: Mechanism question (how does the EUV moat actually hold?)
- Hook: What is the established name for "tacit knowledge as an inimitable moat"?
- Why followed: To ground the EUV leg in real strategy literature rather than the seed note's Tier-4 explainer.
- Key findings: Tacitness generates *causal ambiguity* → barriers to imitation → sustained advantage; non-codifiable knowledge resists copying. Same root property as the automation leg, different consequence.

Surprise: expected the bridge to be a flat "both involve tacit knowledge" resemblance — found the sharper structure that codification simultaneously enables automation and imitation, so the same non-codifiability is an obstacle in CANONIC and a moat in EUV.
Surprise: expected "Polanyi's paradox" to be Polanyi's own term — found David Autor coined the name in 2014.

Saved hooks not followed:
- Von Hippel's "sticky information" — from the imitation-leg search — a candidate single formalism unifying "resists automation" and "resists imitation" as one transfer-cost quantity.
- "Expertise in an expedient strategy blocks later restructuring" (existing vault note, 0.716 to the bridge) — appears in the frontier band; possible third leg (path-dependence of tacit skill).

post-worthy: maybe — a clean, well-grounded bridge with a genuine asymmetry, but it's an internal vault-connection payoff more than a standalone story; would need the sticky-information unifier to become a full post.
