Two vault notes about *who is credited for a mathematical idea* —
[[claim-linnainmaa-priority-not-paternity]] (priority without paternity) and
[[claim-pontryagin-worked-blind-via-mothers-spoken-symbol-glosses]] (an
independent, uncredited Soviet optimal-control lineage) — are both instances of
a phenomenon the sociology of science named decades ago and, fittingly,
misattributed. That shared abstraction, not their surface topic, is the real
bridge between them.

**1. Stigler's law of eponymy is an instance of itself.** The law: "no
scientific discovery is named after its original discoverer." Stephen Stigler
(1980) built the self-reference in deliberately, crediting the sociologist
Robert Merton as the true originator — "in the Mertonian tradition of the
