This capture answers the open thread logged in
[[question-lucky-widrow-adaptive-filter-mutual-awareness]], raised while promoting
[[claim-lucky-1965-adaptive-equalizer-steepest-descent-transversal-filter]]. Research this
session pulled the primary text of Lucky's 1965 BSTJ paper itself (re-extracted via
`extract_pdf`; sha256 `5ce636f7…`, matching the hash already on file in the existing
claim-note's audit trail) and three primary sources on Widrow's side: his 2013 Computer
History Museum oral history, his 2005 IEEE Signal Processing Magazine first-person
retrospective, and the 1990 Widrow & Lehr *Proceedings of the IEEE* survey. All four URLs
were verified to resolve; all four fetches reported `tls: "verified"` (CHM PDF) or were
confirmed as legitimate archive.org / Stanford faculty-page PDFs. No recognition signals
per the safety spec fired on any of these four sources — no adversarial content, no
addressed-to-AI language, nothing warranting a Tier-5 downgrade.

## Claim: Lucky's 1965 Bell Labs equalizer paper cites no Widrow or Hoff work

The reference list of R. W. Lucky, "Automatic Equalization for Digital Communication," *Bell
System Technical Journal* 44(4), April 1965, pp. 547–588, contains exactly four entries: "1.
Blumlein, A. D., British Patent No. 517516[.] 2. Kallman, Heinze E., Transversal Filters, Proc.
IRE, 28, July, 1940. 3. Kac, M., Random Walk and the Theory of Brownian Motion... 4. Nyquist, H.,
Certain Topics in Telegraph Transmission Theory, Trans. AIEE[.]" There is no citation to Widrow
& Hoff's 1960 WESCON paper ("Adaptive Switching Circuits") or to any other Widrow-authored work,
in the paper's own bibliography.

This was checked directly against the primary document (OCR text extracted from the
archive.org scan, matching the sha256 hash already recorded in the vault's existing audit trail
for this paper), not inferred from a secondary summary. It answers one of the two concrete tests
the original open question proposed ("check the reference lists of Lucky 1965... does he cite
Widrow & Hoff 1960 or Widrow's adaptive-filter work?") — the answer is no.

## Claim: Widrow's own retrospectives describe Lucky's Bell Labs algorithm as independently developed and different from LMS, with LMS entering Bell Labs' work only afterward

**Claim type**: historical / technical-mechanism (Widrow's characterization of what Lucky's
algorithm was and was not) — held to the Tier 1–2 floor; both sources below are Tier 1
(Widrow's own words about his own experience, in a direct interview transcript and in his own
authored retrospective).

In a 2013 Computer History Museum oral history, asked how the LMS algorithm came to be
"picked up fairly widely" outside Widrow's own lab, Widrow answered in his own words: "there's a
man named Robert Lucky who is very famous in the annals of the IEEE... And Lucky developed the
adaptive equalizer at Bell Labs. He had developed a learning algorithm, which is different from
LMS, and, in my opinion, not as good. And when they—it's very hard for anything to ever get into
Bell Labs because they're like MIT. The sun rises and sets right there. And all good things come
from there. Anything coming from somewhere else is either suspect or ignorable. But somehow LMS
got in there and got into their work on the adaptive modems. And it was the work on adaptive
modems at Bell Labs that really caused it to get into digital communications." Asked what year,
Widrow said: "Oh gosh, I don't know fifty, sixty—probably '65, '66, '67. You'll have to Google
and look up Lucky's first paper... he shows adaptive algorithms different from LMS. When they
actually started using LMS? That I'm not sure."

Widrow's own 2005 IEEE Signal Processing Magazine retrospective ("Thinking About Thinking: The
Discovery of the LMS Algorithm") is consistent with this sequencing: "Use of the LMS algorithm
really took off after the invention of the adaptive equalizer by R.W. Lucky and the adaptive echo
canceller by M.M. Londhi and A.J. Presti at Bell Telephone Laboratories in the 1960s and 1970s."
The 1990 Widrow & Lehr *Proceedings of the IEEE* survey frames Stanford's line as separate from
the start: "adaptive systems research at Stanford traveled an independent path," crediting
"outstanding work by Lucky and others at Bell Laboratories" only afterward, for bringing "the LMS
algorithm to adaptive equalization in high-speed modems... and to adaptive echo cancellers" —
i.e., LMS's entry into Bell Labs' work is described as a later graft onto Lucky's already-distinct
original invention, not present at its 1965–66 origin. (This third quote is the one already on
file in [[claim-lucky-1965-adaptive-equalizer-steepest-descent-transversal-filter]]; it is
repeated here because it corroborates, in Widrow's own words across three separate documents
spanning 1990–2013, the same sequencing.)

Taken together with the bibliography check above, the weight of evidence — entirely from
Widrow's side of the story plus the paper's own citation record — is that Lucky's original 1965
equalizer was invented independently of Widrow-Hoff LMS, using Lucky's own distinct algorithm,
and that LMS specifically was adopted at Bell Labs only some unspecified time later ("I'm not
sure" — Widrow's own words).

## Claim: The central question remains only half-answered — Lucky's own first-person account of whether he knew of Widrow's work was not obtained this session

**Claim type**: historical (a statement about what evidence is and is not in hand, not a claim
about the world).

Every source found and read this session for the "were they aware of each other" question comes
from Widrow's side (his oral history, his own retrospective papers) plus a direct read of Lucky's
paper's own bibliography. Lucky's own oral history exists — the Engineering and Technology
History Wiki (ETHW) hosts an "Oral-History:Robert Lucky" page, and a search snippet indicated it
discusses Lucky's Bell Labs equalizer work including decision-directed learning — but the page
returned HTTP 403 Forbidden to this session's fetch tool and could not be read. No first-person
statement from Lucky about whether he was aware of Widrow-Hoff's 1960 work at the time he wrote
his 1965 paper was located. The absence of a Widrow/Hoff citation in Lucky's bibliography, above,
is suggestive but not dispositive of *unawareness* — a researcher can know of adjacent work
without citing it, especially work published in a different community's venue (WESCON conference
proceedings vs. Bell System Technical Journal).

Mark this specific sub-question — Lucky's own side of the awareness question —
**[unverified — could not confirm or deny after search]**. The broader question (independent
convergence vs. mutual awareness) is better-evidenced than that framing suggests, given the two
claims above, but a clean answer would still benefit from Lucky's own words.

> The evidence here is real but one-sided — every quote is Widrow talking about Lucky, plus a direct read of Lucky's own bibliography. Nobody has yet found Lucky's own account of whether he'd heard of Widrow-Hoff before writing his 1965 paper. The bibliography check is a solid Tier-1 data point in favor of independent origination (no citation, in either direction, is at least suggestive), but "he didn't cite it" is a weaker instrument than "he said he didn't know about it." Worth flagging for whoever promotes this: the honest framing is "independent origination, better-than-even-odds, on the strength of Widrow's own telling and an absent citation" — not a closed case.
