Can B.I. Kanevskii & V.A. Senderov's 1980 samizdat report "Intellectual Genocide" be located and read directly, to verify the Mekh-mat/MIFI/MFTI admission-rate figures Shen reproduces?

Short answer: partially. The report itself — or at least a reconstructed English translation of it — can now be located and read directly: it was tracked down from archival photocopies and published for the first time by Mikhail Shifman in 2005. Reading it directly, however, complicates rather than simply confirms the figures the vault currently attributes to it. The MFTI admission-rate figures A. Shen reproduces match the primary text exactly. The MIFI figures show a specific numerical discrepancy that the primary document's own internal arithmetic appears to resolve in its own favor. And the single most load-bearing number in the existing vault claim-note — the Mekh-mat 47-vs-40 (85%-vs-15%) table — turns out not to be contained in "Intellectual Genocide" as located and translated at all.

Claim: The 1980 samizdat report "Intellectual Genocide" can be located and read — first published in English translation in 2005, reconstructed from three named archives, with the Russian original unpublished but held in a named private archive

Claim type: historical/definitional (does the document exist and is it accessible). Floor: Tier 3-4 acceptable; this clears Tier 1 — Shifman's own first-person account, on his own venue, of what he personally did.

Mikhail Shifman, a physicist at the University of Minnesota, spent roughly four years locating the report. Starting from a lead in Ilan Vardi's Mekh-mat problem-solutions essay, he found "only marginal mentions" via search engines and had to write to archives directly. In autumn 2000 he received photocopies from three separate institutions — the Forschungsstelle Osteuropa (Universität Bremen), the Open Society Archives at Central European University (Budapest), and the Memorial Archive (Moscow) — "none of them complete, all taken from typewritten n-th carbon copy of distinct originals." Two student assistants (Nodira Dadabayeva and Alexei Kobrinsky) then compared the three incomplete copies, reconstructed a full text, and translated it into English. In late 2003 Shifman also made direct contact with Valery Senderov and, through him, Boris Kanevsky, who "owns a large private archive of Samizdat documents." The result, "Intellectual Genocide," appears as Part 2 of Shifman's edited anthology You Failed Your Math Test, Comrade Einstein (World Scientific, 2005) — explicitly billed as "the first publication of this essay."

The Russian original itself remains unpublished in Russian: Shifman's own bibliography for the book states "Full text of the Russian original can be obtained from B. Kanevsky," and in a 2012 retrospective he confirms directly, "Статья «Интеллектуальный геноцид» по-русски не опубликована... мне удалось с большим трудом разыскать машинописную копию и опубликовать ее по-английски" ("The article 'Intellectual Genocide' has not been published in Russian... with great difficulty I managed to find a typewritten copy and publish it in English"). So the underlying Russian typescript has not been independently located by this vault; what has been located and read is a reconstructed English translation, edited and published by a named academic with documented archival provenance.

Claim type: quantitative. Floor: Tier 1-2 required. Cleared — both sides of the comparison are Tier 1, own-venue primary reproductions.

"Intellectual Genocide" states, for 1980 MFTI applicants from the same set of Moscow special schools: "of the 85 graduates... applying to the MFTI, 53 were in Group 1 [non-Jewish] and 32 in Group 2 [Jewish]. Of the former 53 there were 39 admitted, and from the latter 32, there were 4 admitted." This matches, digit for digit, the MFTI row of the table A. Shen printed in his 1994 Mathematical Intelligencer article: First group 53 total / 39 admitted; Second group 32 total / 4 admitted.

Claim: The MIFI admission figures show a discrepancy between Shen's published table and the primary text — and the primary text's own arithmetic appears to support its own figure over Shen's

Claim type: quantitative. Floor: Tier 1-2 required. Both sources clear the floor individually; the discrepancy itself is the finding.

Shen's table gives MIFI: First group (non-Jewish) 54 total, 26 admitted; Second group (Jewish) 29 total, 3 admitted. "Intellectual Genocide" itself gives, for the same 1980 MIFI cohort: "of the 83 graduates... applying to the MIFI, 54 were non-Jewish (Group 1) and 29 Jewish (Group 2). Of the former 54, there were 36 admitted and of the latter 29 only 3 were admitted." The Jewish/Group 2 figures agree exactly (29 total, 3 admitted) but the non-Jewish/Group 1 admitted count differs — 26 in Shen vs. 36 in the primary text.

The primary text supplies an internal check: it states the combined admissions from Group 1 across both institutes (MIFI + MFTI) as "75 admissions" ("the 107 applicants to both institutes from Group 1 yielded 75 admissions"). Since the MFTI Group 1 admitted count is undisputed at 39 (both sources agree, see claim above), the MIFI Group 1 admitted count implied by the primary document's own stated 107/75 total is 75 − 39 = 36 — matching the primary text's own "36," not Shen's "26." This is not an independent third source confirming 36; it is the same document's internal arithmetic being self-consistent. But it does mean the discrepancy is more likely a transcription or typesetting error in Shen's 1994 published table than an error introduced by Shifman's 2005 translation/reconstruction.

Claim type: quantitative / historical (a claim about what a specific, now-read document does and does not contain). Floor: Tier 1-2 required; cleared — this is a direct reading of the primary translated text.

This is the central finding for the vault's existing claim-note. "Intellectual Genocide," discussing the 1980 Mekh-mat examination cohort specifically, states plainly that no statistical table was compiled for that institution that year: "Since the total number of Jews from physics and mathematics high schools applying to Mekhmat was not large it is not reasonable to compile tables and perform statistical analysis — the sample is too small. Instead, we will consider several Jewish applicants' 'Mekhmat entrance examinations experiences'..." The chapter then proceeds case-by-case (Krichevskii, Lavrovskii, Temchin, Vegrina, and others), never returning to a Mekh-mat summary table. Only for MIFI and MFTI does the document supply group totals, because "the number of Jewish applicants to the MIFI and MFTI is sufficient large that an illustrative table can be made."

Shen's own article is consistent with this gap once read closely: he introduces the 47-vs-40 Mekh-mat table not as a quote from "Intellectual Genocide" but as data "obtained in 1979 by Kanevskii and Senderov," and separately explains that this pair's statistical work was also folded into a different document — "In 1979, document #112 of the Moscow group for implementing the Helsinki agreements, titled 'Discrimination against Jews entering the university,' was signed by E. Bonner, S. Kallistratova, I. Kovalev, M. Landa, N. Meiman, T. Osipova and Yu. Yarym-Ageev. Included in this document were the statistical data collected by B.I. Kanevskii and V.A. Senderov." "Intellectual Genocide" itself even cites this earlier document internally, for its own working definition of "Jew" ("see Document No. 112 of the Moscow Helsinki group"). The most parsimonious reading: the Mekh-mat 47/40 table circulated by Shen most likely originates in this 1979 Moscow Helsinki Group document (or a related, still-unlocated 1979 compilation), not in "Intellectual Genocide" (1980) — which this vault has now located and read, and which does not contain it.
