Bellman's own autobiography, *Eye of the Hurricane* (1984), excerpted at length by Stuart Dreyfus in a 2002 *Operations Research* retrospective, closes that gap with an origin story sharper than the textbook fact: Bellman chose the name "dynamic programming" as camouflage. Washington had "a very interesting gentleman... named Wilson," the Air Force's ultimate boss, who "actually had a pathological" fear and hatred of the word, research.
