earliest node in the optimal-control-to-backpropagation lineage — carries
its own numbered reference list of 29 works at the end of the paper. Read in
full (direct fetch, not a summary), every reference is either calculus-of-
variations mathematics (Hestenes, Hadamard, Courant, Bliss, Curry, Hestenes
& Stiefel) or contemporary rocket/flight-path optimization work (Garfinkel,
Cicala, Miele, Breakwell, Okhotsimskii & Eneev, Leitmann, Kelley's own 1958
thesis). The very first reference — the earliest work Kelley cites, and the
one his own method most directly extends — is Magnus Hestenes's "A General
Problem in the Calculus of Variations with Applications to Paths of Least
Time," "Rand RM-100, March 1950." No reference to Harry Nyquist, Hendrik
Bode, "Regeneration Theory," "feedback amplifier," or "classical control
theory" appears anywhere in the paper's text or bibliography. Kelley's own
stated lineage, in his own words, is the RAND/calculus-of-variations
rocket-trajectory tradition, not Bell Labs stability theory.

This is a documented absence in a single node of the four-name chain the
question asks about (Kelley), not a claim about Pontryagin's, Bellman's, or

writes in "A Brief History of Automatic Control" (*IEEE Control Systems
Magazine*, June 1996, pp. 17–25; DOI 10.1109/37.506394) that the
mathematical root of optimal control is the classical mechanics of Lagrange
and Hamilton, describing performance-index optimization problems as having
"an obvious and strong analogy with the classical variational formulations
of analytical mechanics given by Lagrange and Hamilton," and
crediting Pontryagin's 1956 maximum principle as "the generalization of
Hamilton's approach to geometric optics by" Pontryagin — a lineage that
runs through 19th-century mechanics, not through the 1930s Bell Labs
frequency-response tradition.

Independently, Frank L. Lewis — a named control-theory academic (University
of Texas at Arlington) — makes the same root explicit in Chapter 1 of his
own textbook, *Applied Optimal Control and Estimation* (Prentice-Hall,
1992), reprinted with permission on his own institutional site: "With the
advent of the space age, controls design in the United States turned away
from the frequency-domain techniques of classical control theory and back
to the differential equation techniques of the late 1800's, which were
couched in the time domain." Lewis frames this explicitly as a *return*
past classical control to an earlier tradition: "On the failure of any
paradigm, a return to historical and natural first principles is required.
Thus, it was clear that a return was needed to the time-domain techniques
of the 'primitive' period of control theory... It should be realized that
the work of Lagrange and Hamilton makes it straightforward to write
nonlinear equations of motion for many dynamical systems."

Both historians, independently, name the same specific mathematical
ancestor for optimal control (Lagrange–Hamilton calculus of variations,
not Nyquist–Bode frequency response), and both frame the 1957–1960
transition as leaving classical control's paradigm rather than extending
it. Neither states that Pontryagin, Bellman, Kelley, or Bryson cited or
drew on Nyquist or Bode specifically — the absence is not merely unstated,
it is the space their own accounts of the field's genealogy do not pass
through.

## Claim: the one documented technical bridge between the classical (Nyquist/Bode) and optimal-control (Pontryagin/Bellman/Kelley/Bryson) traditions is a later, separate contribution by Rudolf Kalman — not a line running through the four names the question asks about

Bennett's account locates a genuine point of contact between the two
traditions, but it is later than, and external to, Pontryagin (1956),
Bellman (1957), Kelley (1960), and Bryson (1961)'s own foundational work:
at the first IFAC Congress in Moscow in 1960, Kalman presented "On the
General Theory of Control Systems," which Bennett describes as showing "a
deep and exact duality" between multivariable feedback control and
multivariable feedback filtering — the mathematical move that let

re-expressed in the state-space vocabulary of the new optimal-control
theory. This is a real, documented linkage between the two literatures —
but it is Kalman's own 1960 synthesis, made after Pontryagin's and

not a citation or influence line running backward from Nyquist/Bode into
