Demography Symposium in Chengdu, Sichuan province," his 1984 report to Hu
Yaobang, and his 1985 Yicheng County pilot ("Liang's experiment began in
July 1985, when he was director of the institute of population at the
Shanxi Academy of Social Sciences"). Conversely, a full read of Stan
Waning's 2024 U-Today interview with
[[entity-geert-jan-olsder|Geert Jan Olsder]] contains no mention of Liang
Zhongtang, Yicheng, a two-child pilot, or Chengdu — its entire narrative
runs from "the spring of 1975," an unannounced Chinese delegation at the

mathematics at the THT"), through the 1978 Helsinki IFAC congress, to a

third document (footnote 24 of Whyte, Wang & Cai 2015). This pairing has
neither. The only resemblance is structural: both notes function, within
the vault's argument, as single-witness, decades-later retrospective
accounts (Liang's story reaches the vault through a 2016 journalist, 37
years after 1979; Olsder's reaches it through a 2024 interview, 49 years
after 1975) that push a key actor's documented involvement earlier than a
tidier version of the origin story would suggest. That is a genuine
