This vault's one-child-policy cluster already established (2026-08-31) that Liberty
Fund — publisher of [[claim-ae-clark-2016-essay-credits-song-jian-omits-liang-zhongtang|A.E.
Clark's 2016 essay]] — was founded by a man whose earlier philanthropy (China
Institute of America, 1926) was co-founded by John Dewey and Hu Shih, and flagged
both names as "genuinely untouched." Following that lead:

**Dewey lived in China for over two years (1919-1921), invited by his former
Columbia student Hu Shih, during the May Fourth Movement.** Acting Beijing
University president Cai Yuanpei introduced him: "Confucius said respect the
emperor, the learned doctor advocates democracy." Dewey himself later wrote
that living there was "intellectually the most profitable thing I've ever
done" (Behuniak 2015, Tier 2).

**A second Dewey student took pragmatism somewhere no one connects it: B.R.
Ambedkar, chief architect of India's constitution and leader of its anti-caste
Dalit movement, studied under Dewey at Columbia (1913-16) and called him,
decades later, "wonderful": "I am so sorry. I owe all my intellectual life to
him."** Ambedkar's own definition of democracy — "not merely a form of
Government... primarily a mode of associated living" — echoes Dewey's *Democracy
and Education*, retasked as an argument against caste (Stroud 2023, Tier 2).
Dewey's own 1888 primary text supplies the root phrase directly: "democracy
means that personality is the first and final reality" (*The Ethics of
Democracy*, Tier 1).

Same teacher, same decade of classes, two students who each became foundational
to a different nation's 20th-century refounding — one dismantling Confucian
