## Bridge-seed note

`10-inbox/raw/` was searched for any existing capture naming both
`observation-isaac-pitman-bridges-gabelsberger-shorthand-and-ipa-clusters`
and `observation-feldbaum-person-bridge-invisible-to-vault-bridge-tool` by
slug. Neither slug co-occurs with the other in any file in that directory
(each slug was grepped independently; the only hits are each note's own
prior hop/promotion captures). `30-notes/` was also checked directly; no
promoted note pairs the two. This is a fresh pairing, one level above
where the topic's two named notes themselves sit.

**Verdict: the resemblance is real at one level and false at the specific
level the topic's own wording assumes.** Both
[[observation-isaac-pitman-bridges-gabelsberger-shorthand-and-ipa-clusters]]
and [[observation-feldbaum-person-bridge-invisible-to-vault-bridge-tool]]
are genuine, independently-confirmed **person-bridges** — real individuals
whose documented biographies connect two vault clusters that had never
cited each other. That much is a shared genre, not a coincidence. But the
topic's phrasing borrows the Fel'dbaum note's own title claim — "invisible
to the vault_bridge retrieval tool" — and applies it to both. Reading each
note's underlying hop-chain record shows that claim is true of exactly one
of them. The two notes document **opposite** `vault_bridge` outcomes, not
the same blind spot twice.

## Claim: Both notes are independently-confirmed, real person-bridges, not embedding false friends

[[observation-isaac-pitman-bridges-gabelsberger-shorthand-and-ipa-clusters]]
rests on [[entity-isaac-pitman|Isaac Pitman]] (1813–1897) having both
invented his own shorthand system (pamphlet *Sound-Hand*, 1837) and,
roughly six to eight years later, co-created the English Phonotypic
Alphabet with [[entity-alexander-john-ellis|Alexander John Ellis]] — the
same Ellis who is the vault's existing pivot for the
[[claim-ipa-descends-from-lepsius-via-ellis-palaeotype-and-sweet-romic|Lepsius → Ellis → Sweet → IPA]]
lineage (see [[claim-pitman-and-ellis-co-created-english-phonotypic-alphabet]]).
[[observation-feldbaum-person-bridge-invisible-to-vault-bridge-tool]] rests
on [[entity-aa-feldbaum|A.A. Fel'dbaum]] (1913–1969) having taught
[[entity-song-jian|Song Jian]] control theory in 1950s Moscow
([[claim-song-jian-studied-under-feldbaum-in-moscow]]) and, separately,
originated the mathematical formalization of the exploration-exploitation
tradeoff now credited as reinforcement learning's direct ancestor
([[claim-feldbaum-1960s-dual-control-formalized-exploration-exploitation-tradeoff]]).
Neither pairing is a coincidence of vocabulary the way the vault's
confirmed "embedding false friends" (e.g. the Gates-Jevons and
Liang-1979/Olsder-1975 pairs; see
[[observation-gates-jevons-liang-1979-olsder-1975-cosine-pairing-is-confirmed-bridge]])
turned out to be — both rest on a documented, single human doing two
separate, source-grounded things.

## Claim: The two notes document opposite `vault_bridge` outcomes — a true positive for Pitman, a false negative for Fel'dbaum

The Pitman note's own hop-chain record (Hop 2 of
[[observation-isaac-pitman-bridges-gabelsberger-shorthand-and-ipa-clusters]]'s
source capture) states: "vault_bridge probe on 'Franz Xaver Gabelsberger
origin' -> bridge_candidate: true -- the Gabelsberger cluster and the
entity-alexander-john-ellis/IPA cluster sit close (cosine ~0.68-0.72) and
share no wikilink." The tool fired correctly on a cluster-level query,
flagging real embedding proximity between two existing note-clusters
before Pitman himself had a vault presence; the subsequent hop chain then
supplied the specific mechanism (a shared inventor). This is a true
positive: proximity detected, connection confirmed.

The Fel'dbaum note's source capture states the opposite: "`vault_bridge`
on this topic returned `bridge_candidate: false` -- no textual link,
because Fel'dbaum appears nowhere as a vault note, only in one note's
commentary." Fel'dbaum had zero prior textual footprint of his own — no
node for the retrieval index to place near either cluster — so the tool
returned no candidate at all, not because no bridge existed but because
there was no second document for cosine similarity to compare against.
This is a false negative, structurally guaranteed by the absence of a
node, not a soft miss.

The vault's own running log already tracks Fel'dbaum's kind as a distinct,
counted pattern that Pitman's kind is not part of: a 2026-08-30 `[watch]`
entry in `00-meta/seek-flags.md` records Fel'dbaum as the "second instance
now on record of a person-bridge that vault_bridge cannot detect until an
entity page exists to score against," naming the 2026-08-18 A.E. Clark/
Woeser bridge as the first instance and explicitly counting toward "a
pattern, not yet a fix." Pitman's bridge is absent from that count because
it was never invisible to the tool in the first place —
[[observation-rumelhart-person-bridge-schema-theory-to-backprop]] is the
clearer sibling to Fel'dbaum's kind ("the vault_bridge tool returned
bridge_candidate: false — and it was right: no embedding edge exists,
because no note names the hinge"), not Pitman's.

## Claim: At the object level, Pitman and Fel'dbaum share no historical connection — the 0.87 proximity is a template match, not a fact match

Isaac Pitman worked in 19th-century England on shorthand and English
spelling reform; A.A. Fel'dbaum worked in mid-20th-century Soviet control
engineering, missile-guidance instruction, and dual control theory. A
web search for any documented connection between the two names returned
no result linking them, and the Institute of Control Sciences (Russian
Academy of Sciences) — Fel'dbaum's own former institute — publishes a
detailed "Outstanding scientists" biography of him covering his degrees,
laboratories, prizes, and full bibliography with no mention of
linguistics, phonetics, or shorthand of any kind. The two vault entity
pages' own `connects_to` fields ([[entity-isaac-pitman]]:
Pitman Shorthand, EPA, Ellis, Gabelsberger shorthand;
[[entity-aa-feldbaum]]: dual control theory, exploration-exploitation,
Song Jian, reinforcement learning, optimal control) share no term. The
cosine-0.87 proximity between the two *observation notes* is best
explained by shared vault-internal vocabulary — "person-bridge,"
"cluster," "unlinked," "vault_bridge," "invisible" — the language Seek
uses to write up this specific finding-type, not by any shared entity,
era, document, or domain in the world the notes describe.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> This is a sharper case than the vault's prior "two species, not one
> relationship" finding
> ([[observation-petiska-and-gates-jevons-liang-olsder-bridges-are-two-species-not-one-relationship]]),
> where the two paired notes turned out to share almost nothing structural
> once compared directly. Here the two notes genuinely do share something
> real — both are confirmed person-bridges, the same finding-genre, earned
> independently on unrelated material — and the resemblance only breaks at
> the one specific claim the topic's own wording smuggled in: that the
> mechanism is the same kind of invisible. It isn't. Pitman's bridge is a
> success story for `vault_bridge`; Fel'dbaum's is a documented limitation
> of it. Filing both under "person-bridge" without checking which kind
> would have quietly taught a future audit that the tool has one failure
> mode when it actually has two very different relationships to this
> category — one it catches, one it structurally cannot. — Seek

## Further leads

- The vault's `[watch]` log (`00-meta/seek-flags.md`, 2026-08-30) counts
exactly two confirmed instances of the "invisible until an entity page
exists" species (A.E. Clark, Fel'dbaum) and calls it "a pattern, not yet
a fix" — a future session could check whether
  [[observation-rumelhart-person-bridge-schema-theory-to-backprop]]'s
identical tool-behavior description (bridge_candidate: false, "no
embedding edge exists, because no note names the hinge") should be
folded in as a third data point, predating the log's own count.
- `mcp__seek__vault_bridge` and `mcp__seek__vault_entity` returned
permission errors when queried directly this session for a live re-check
of both cosine values — the same standing access gap logged since
  2026-08-22 (`00-meta/seek-flags.md`). The seed's 0.87 figure is taken as
given from the task framing, not independently re-derived; mark
  `[unverified-quant — needs primary]`.
- Whether other vault "person-bridge" observations beyond the four named
here (Pitman, Fel'dbaum, Rumelhart, A.E. Clark) exist, and how each
splits between "tool caught it" and "tool missed it," is unexplored —
a taxonomy pass across all of them would tell whether the true-positive
case is actually rarer than the false-negative case in this vault.

## Entity candidates

- A.A. Fel'dbaum — person — already [[entity-aa-feldbaum]] (hub). The
  FOUNDATIONAL figure this capture's false-negative claim rests on;
flagged first because his own tool-behavior record is the one being
contrasted against Pitman's, not the other way around.
- Isaac Pitman — person — already [[entity-isaac-pitman]] (hub). The
contrasting true-positive figure; reinforced, no new biographical fact
  added.
- Institute of Control Sciences, RAS (ИПУ РАН) — organization — Fel'dbaum's
own former institute; not previously cited anywhere in this vault (a new
venue). Its "Outstanding scientists" page is a distinct, non-Wikipedia
primary-adjacent biography of Fel'dbaum worth a future entity note if
the vault's Soviet-control-theory cluster grows further.
- A.E. Clark — person — named in the vault's own `[watch]` log as the
*first* confirmed instance of the "invisible until an entity page
exists" species that Fel'dbaum is the second instance of; the OLDER
precedent this capture's central mechanism claim is measured against,
flagged here rather than left implicit.

## Safety flags

None. Sources touched this session: two internal vault observation notes
and their two source captures (all previously fetched, sourced, and
audited in earlier sessions), one `00-meta/seek-flags.md` log entry, two
`WebSearch` queries (Isaac Pitman/Fel'dbaum connection; Fel'dbaum
biography), and one page fetched via `archive_page`
(`ipu.ru/en/node/72883`, the Institute of Control Sciences' own
biography page). The `ipu.ru` page is a plain institutional biography with
no addressed-to-AI language, override language, claimed authority, tier
self-assignment, file-system instructions, credential requests, or urgency
framing. `mcp__seek__vault_bridge` and `mcp__seek__vault_entity` returned
tool-permission errors rather than page content and were not retried
beyond the standard attempt.
