Answers [[question-verify-van-der-stoel-patocka-meeting-date]], which was opened
against [[claim-patocka-interrogated-after-van-der-stoel-meeting-died-two-weeks-later]]
after that claim's own source — Paměť národa's 2024 magazine article — carried a
headline dating the meeting to January 1977 while its body text, twice, gives
1 March 1977. A 2026-08-27 scheduled audit already discharged the date half of
the question by corroborating 1 March 1977 against the Netherlands Ministry of
Foreign Affairs' own history page and a YouTube source ("Havel Channel"), but
left the narrower half open: nobody had listened to or read a transcript of
the archive's own named holding — Max van der Stoel's 1996 recorded interview,
conducted by historian Rudolf Vévoda — to check what the primary testimony
itself says.

This session re-confirms the date independently (via the Dutch government's
own page, re-fetched and re-quoted below, plus a source new to the vault: a
transcript of the actual 1 March 1977 meeting hosted by Charles University),
and finds a second, previously unrecorded audio trace of the meeting itself.
But it does **not** close the narrower half of the question. No public
catalogue entry, downloadable audio, or full transcript of the archive's 1996
Vévoda–van der Stoel interview was located — only the same selectively-quoted
passages the existing vault claim already carries. That the *magazine's own
account of its holding* says the tape is too degraded to publish in full is
itself the closest available answer to "does the archive's own recording
settle the discrepancy": the archive's own explanation is that the recording
cannot currently be checked at all, by Seek or by the magazine's own readers.

## Claim: 1 March 1977, not January 1977, is the correct meeting date — confirmed independently by the Dutch government's own account and by a document distinct from anything cited in the vault so far

**Claim type:** historical/dating claim, escalated to Tier 1 given the contested
headline/body discrepancy in the source it corrects. Floor met.

**verifies: question-verify-van-der-stoel-patocka-meeting-date**

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs' own bilateral-relations history page
states:

> "In March 1977 Max van der Stoel, the Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs,
> travelled to Prague for an official state visit."

Independently of Paměť national and of the Dutch government, a one-page
transcript of the meeting itself — Patočka's and van der Stoel's own recorded
words, translated by Erika Abrams (a longtime scholar and French translator
of Patočka's work) — is hosted by Charles University's Centre for Theoretical
Study (Centrum pro teoretická studia). The document's own header dates the
exchange:

> "Jan Patočka and Max van der Stoel, March 1, 1977"

source_url: "https://www.cts.cuni.cz/soubory/Ostatni_akce/Interview%20Jan%20Pato%C4%8Dka%20and%20Max%20van%20der%20Stoel%20in%201977.pdf"

This transcript's chain of custody beyond the header is not stated on the
page itself — a caveat worth flagging rather than hiding — but it is an
institutional venue plausibly connected to Patočka's own philosophical
circle, and it converges with the Dutch government's page on the same date
from a source unconnected to either Paměť národa or the Netherlands' own
foreign ministry.

## Claim: A separate audio trace of the 1 March 1977 meeting — made at the time by the journalist who arranged it, not the 1996 Vévoda interview — survives in an independent Prague sound archive

**Claim type:** historical claim about the existence and provenance of a
document, escalated to Tier 1-2 as load-bearing for the question's "does a
recording settle this" framing. Floor met.

**verifies: question-verify-van-der-stoel-patocka-meeting-date**

Journalist Dick Verkijk, who travelled with van der Stoel's delegation and
arranged the meeting, made an audio recording of the encounter itself in
1977. Paměť národa's own 2024 article acknowledges this recording survives
and is distinct from the 1996 interview tape:

> "Dick Vekijk byl natolik pohotový novinář, že ze schůzky pořídil zvukový
> záznam, který si dnes můžeme poslechnout." ["Dick Verkijk was quick-thinking
> enough as a journalist that he made an audio recording of the meeting,
> which we can listen to today."]

A separate field-recording archive, Zvuky Prahy / Sounds of Prague (run by
Asociace Mlok), hosts what it identifies as that same 1977 recording, with
its own catalogue metadata dating it "Nahráno: 1977-03-01" ["Recorded:
1977-03-01"] and crediting Verkijk directly as its source:

> "Poděkování patří Dicku Verkeikovi, přímému účastníkovi a iniciátorovi
> pražského setkání Jana Patočky s Maxem van der Stoelem za poskytnutí
> zvukového záznamu." ["Thanks go to Dick Verkijk, direct participant and
> initiator of the Prague meeting between Jan Patočka and Max van der Stoel,
> for providing the audio recording."]

This is a third, independent line converging on 1 March 1977 — but it is not
the archival holding the open question names. It is the *meeting's own*
recording, made contemporaneously by a participant, not Paměť národa's 1996
interview with van der Stoel decades later. The distinction matters: this
claim corroborates the date further but does not itself answer whether the
1996 recording — the specific document the question asks about — agrees.

## Claim: the archive's own 1996 recording remains unaccessed — Paměť národa's own account says the tape's audio quality is too degraded to publish beyond the excerpts already in the vault

**Claim type:** historical/source-availability claim. Floor met (Tier 1,
Paměť národa's own account of its own holding).

**verifies: question-verify-van-der-stoel-patocka-meeting-date**

Paměť národa's own article states plainly that the 1996 tape — conducted by
Rudolf Vévoda, given to the archive only in 2024 — cannot currently be heard
or read in full:

> "Rozhovor s Maxem van der Stoelem v roce 1996 pořídil historik Rudolf
> Vévoda. Letos magnetofonovou pásku poskytl Paměti národa." ["The 1996
> interview with Max van der Stoel was conducted by historian Rudolf Vévoda.
> This year [2024] he gave the tape to Memory of Nations."]

> "Bohužel není v dostatečné zvukové kvalitě, podepsal se na ní zub času. V
> tuto chvíli se tedy musíme omezit pouze na přepis vybraných pasáží."
> ["Unfortunately it is not of sufficient audio quality — time has taken its
> toll. For now we must limit ourselves to a transcript of selected
> passages."]

No public catalogue page, downloadable audio, or fuller transcript for this
specific 1996 recording was located this session (a targeted search for a
dedicated Paměť národa witness/catalogue entry for van der Stoel returned
nothing beyond this same magazine article). The narrower half of the open
question — **does the archive's own 1996 recording settle the
discrepancy?** — stays **`[unverified — could not confirm or deny after
search]`**. The most honest available answer is that the archive itself
cannot currently settle it either: by its own editors' account, the tape is
too degraded to check beyond the passages already quoted in the article this
vault has already captured.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> The question asked whether a recording could settle a two-word discrepancy
> in one magazine's own headline. What actually settles it is three
> independent chains that never touch the 1996 tape at all — a foreign
> ministry's institutional memory, a university's own transcript, a sound
> archivist's catalogue card. The 1996 recording turns out not to be load-
> bearing for the date; it is load-bearing only for van der Stoel's own later
> reflections on it, which is a different and smaller question than the one
> that was asked. — Seek

## Further leads

- HlídacíPes.org republished the same Post Bellum/Jan Blažek article under a
  "Napsal/a Post Bellum" byline on 2024-08-10 (https://hlidacipes.org/havel-nemohl-prijit-a-husak-se-nastval-jak-max-van-der-stoel-prolomil-normalizacni-ledy/)
  — same headline/body date split, confirms the text is stable across
mirrors rather than corrected on republication.
- Vaclav Havel Library ("Havel Channel") YouTube video, "Max van der Stoel's
Legacy: Standing with Dissidents Then and Now," with guest Frans
Timmermans — stated in a 2026-08-27 vault audit to give "met on March 1st
1977" directly; not independently re-verified this session
  (https://www.vaclavhavel.cz/en/index/video).
- ct24.ceskatelevize.cz, "První setkání Západu se zástupci Charty 77: Max van
der Stoel má v Praze pomník" — Czech Television's own account of the
meeting and the 2017 Prague monument; not fetched this session.
- medium.seznam.cz, "Smrt filozofa. Poslední dny Jana Patočky" — a longer
narrative piece on Patočka's final days; not fetched this session, may
carry additional dating detail on the interrogation/death sequence already
  covered by [[claim-patocka-1977-death-after-stb-interrogation]] and
  [[claim-blazek-stb-file-dates-patocka-interrogation-3-march-1977-prosecution-halted]].
- karolinum.cz hosts at least two academic PDFs on Patočka in English
("jan patočka's non-political politics" and an untitled introduction,
Interpretations journal) that were not opened this session.
- No dedicated Paměť národa witness/catalogue page (of the kind the archive
gives its Czech interviewees, e.g. pametnaroda.cz/en/chvatik-ivan-1941) was
found for van der Stoel himself — worth one more targeted check before
  concluding none exists.

## Safety flags

None. All pages fetched this session (netherlandsandyou.nl, cts.cuni.cz,
sonicity.cz, magazin.pametnaroda.cz, hlidacipes.org, english.radio.cz) were
ordinary third-person institutional, journalistic, or archival-curatorial
prose. No addressed-to-AI language, override language, claimed authority,
tier self-assignment, file-system instructions, credential requests, or
urgency framing encountered on any of them. The cts.cuni.cz PDF fetch
reported `tls: "verified"`.

## Entity candidates

- Dick Verkijk — person — flagged FIRST per the known blind spot: the
foundational figure the whole dating question rests on. He is the
eyewitness/journalist who arranged the 1 March 1977 meeting and made its
contemporaneous audio recording — the source everything else (Paměť
národa's account, the Sounds of Prague catalogue entry, arguably the CTS
transcript) is ultimately measured against, and he is not yet the subject
  of any vault entity page.
- Rudolf Vévoda — person — historian who conducted the still-unaccessed 1996
interview with van der Stoel that this question's narrower half names
  directly; the specific missing link.
- Erika Abrams — person — translator credited on the Charles University
transcript; a long-established scholar of Patočka's work, which lends the
transcript's provenance some weight beyond an anonymous upload.
- Max van der Stoel — person — already a retrieval-surfaced entity
([[entity-max-van-der-stoel]]); this capture adds the corroborated date and
the unresolved-1996-recording detail to what the vault holds on him.
- Centrum pro teoretická studia (Centre for Theoretical Study), Charles
University — concept/institution — host of a primary transcript not
previously in the vault; worth checking for other Patočka-related holdings.
- Jan Blažek — person — Paměť národa/Post Bellum journalist and author of the
2024 article at the center of the original discrepancy; distinct from
historian Petr Blažek (no relation established), who authored the StB-file
  interrogation-date material already in [[claim-blazek-stb-file-dates-patocka-interrogation-3-march-1977-prosecution-halted]]
  — worth a disambiguation note if both are ever promoted to entity pages.
