## Methodology note (read first)

This session could not obtain a direct read of Marta A. Balińska's *For the
Good of Humanity: Ludwik Rajchman, Medical Statesman* (Central European
University Press, 1998) itself. The book's current digital home is a De
Gruyter/CEU Press ebook DOI (`10.1515/9789633865675`) that returned zero
bytes to `archive_page`, and its JSTOR listing
(`jstor.org/stable/10.7829/j.ctv280b6k4`) served a Cloudflare "Client
Challenge" page — the same block pattern already logged in
`00-meta/specs/sources.md` for jstor.org stable-link pages. Google Books
lists the title with "No preview available." `academia.edu`'s hosted PDF
403'd `archive_page`. None of these are adversarial pages (no recognition
signals fired; see Safety flags below) — they are simply unreachable by
this session's tooling, consistent with sources.md's existing
known-blocked-route entries for paywalled scholarly platforms.

What follows is therefore **not** a direct read of Balinska's own words on
the 1957 episode. It is what independent secondary sources — a
family-archive institutional page, an academic historian's biographical
essay, and the publisher's own back-cover description — say when drawing
on her biography, plus one directly-quoted excerpt (from a different,
1940 episode) that a third-party site attributes verbatim to the book.
That distinction is load-bearing for every claim below.

## Claim: Marta Aleksandra Balinska, author of the standard Rajchman biography, is Ludwik Rajchman's own great-granddaughter — a family memoir, not an arms-length account

Ludwik Rajchman's daughter, Irena Rajchman Balinska, had a son, Michel
Balinski (the mathematician known for work on apportionment theory,
1938–2019). Michel Balinski's daughter, Marta Aleksandra Balińska, wrote
the standard biography of her own great-grandfather. The [[entity-ludwik-rajchman|Rajchman]]
family's own memorial-foundation page states the relationship directly, crediting an excerpt to
"Testimonial of Marta Balinska, daughter of Michel BALINSKI. Excerpted
from *For the Good of Humanity: Ludwik Rajchman, Medical Stateman*, 1995"
— placing Marta three generations below Ludwik through his daughter and
grandson. Independently, a 2023 academic article on Rajchman's League of
Nations work describes her, in the same sentence, as "health science
researcher, biographer, and great granddaughter Marta A. Balinska."

This matters for weighing everything else in this capture: the
biography's access to unpublished family archives (which reviews and
citing works consistently note) comes at the cost of being a family
member's account of her own ancestor, not a disinterested biography.

## Claim: Independent secondary accounts drawing on Balinska's biography — entirely outside the FBI/US surveillance record — corroborate the FBI file's 1957 dating and its "never returned" outcome

Three sources independent of each other, of Wikipedia, and of the FBI
file all converge on the same year and the same outcome that
[[claim-fbi-file-confirms-siss-subpoenaed-rajchman-february-1957]] and
[[claim-fbi-file-shows-no-us-contact-with-rajchman-after-1957]] establish
from the US government's own paper trail:

- The Institut Pasteur's own archival chronology of Rajchman — citing
  Balinska's biography as its documentary reference — states: "in 1957,
  he is obliged to leave the country precipitously and never returns,
  settling permanently in France."
- Historian Josep Lluís Barona Vilar (Universitat de València), in a
  2021 biographical essay listing Balinska's biography among its
  "Studies," writes: "In 1957 he was forced to leave America and never
  returned, settling permanently in France." (Barona had published
  closely related wording on the same episode in *Mètode*, 2014, already
  cited in [[claim-ludwik-rajchman-squeezed-out-by-both-cold-war-blocs]] —
  the two Barona pieces likely share text and are not fully independent
  of each other, only of the other sources here.)
- Central European University Press's own description of the book, as
  reproduced on its Google Books listing, states Rajchman "was forced by
  McCarthyism to flee the U.S." — the publisher's own summary of what its
  book says.

None of these three drew on the FBI file, Wikipedia, or the FBI-derived
claim-notes already in this vault. Read together with the FBI file's own
February 1957 subpoena date and its silence after May 1957, this is
corroboration of the year and the outcome from a source lineage entirely
outside the US surveillance record — the family biography and the
academic literature that cites it.

## Claim: None of the Balinska-derived accounts read this session name the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee or James O. Eastland — the SISS/Eastland attribution remains uncorroborated outside the FBI's own file

This is the "complicates" half of the question, and it is a negative
finding rather than a contradiction. Every secondary source located this
session that draws on Balinska's biography — the Institut Pasteur
chronology, Barona Vilar's essay, and the CEU Press blurb — uses the same
generic "McCarthy(ism)" / "McCarthyists" language that
[[claim-fbi-file-confirms-siss-subpoenaed-rajchman-february-1957]]
identifies as a popular flattening also present, uncited, in Wikipedia.
None names the [[entity-james-o-eastland|Senate Internal Security
Subcommittee or its chairman]], the specific body the FBI's own file
identifies as the subpoena's issuer. This does not mean Balinska's actual
text omits the detail — this session could not read her text directly
(see Methodology note above) — but it does mean that, among the sources
that discuss the episode by drawing on her biography, the SISS/Eastland
specificity that corrects the "McCarthy period" framing appears nowhere
outside the primary FBI record itself. The committee-attribution detail
remains a finding unique to the Tier 1 primary, not yet corroborated by
any secondary account of Balinska's work.

  to settle whether the vagueness above is the book's own framing or
  three secondary writers' compression of it — try a physical/library
