This capture answers the biographical half of the topic question directly
(Olsder's own CV) and treats the corroboration half as a genuine research
outcome: no 1975 or 1978 record naming Song Jian or a Chinese delegation
was located, but a contemporary 1975 documentary trail for the *research
content* Olsder says he described to Song was. The two are kept separate
below rather than blurred into a single verdict.

## Claim: Olsder's own 2003 CV establishes his Twente tenure (1971–1981) and career trajectory, independent of any Song Jian narrative

verifies: question-verify-song-jian-1975-twente-delegation-visit

[[entity-geert-jan-olsder|Geert Jan Olsder]] published a brief curriculum
vitae, dated 6 October 2003, on his own Delft University of Technology
staff page. Born 1 January 1944 in Muntendam, the Netherlands, he earned
his M.Sc. (1968) and Ph.D. (1971, "with honours," on time-optimal control
applied to ship-maneuvering) in applied mathematics at Groningen
University. On employment: "From 1971-1981 he was employed at Twente
University of Technology, from 1981-1983 at Hollandse Signaalapparaten, a
high-tech firm based in Hengelo (the Netherlands) which, at that time, was
a subsidiary of Philips. In 1983 he was appointed (full) professor of
Mathematical System Theory at Delft University of Technology." His own
account of his research trajectory states his interests "gradually moved
from optimal control (1968-1975) to dynamic game theory (1973-1985)" — a
timeline that places him doing optimal-control work, not yet game theory,
in 1975, consistent with the population-optimal-control paper discussed in
the next claim. He later served as the university's deputy
vice-chancellor (from 1998) and, in a role omitted from this early CV, as
Delft's vice-rector 1999–2008 (per the TU Delft Research Portal and Dutch
Wikipedia, both consulted but not quoted here as they are Tier 3–4
aggregation of the same underlying facts).

This resolves a lead flagged but unresolved in [[entity-geert-jan-olsder]]'s
2026-09-20 update, which noted that "Twente employment 1971–1981" had been
attributed to Olsder's own 2003 CV in search snippets but that "the CV ...
defeated every direct-fetch route this session tried." It did not defeat
this session's route (`archive_page` against the URL directly, rather than
whatever route the earlier session used) — the primary CV is confirmed
live and readable at the URL below, closing that outstanding lead cleanly:
his employment dates are 1971–1981 at Twente, not merely "until 1982" as
the 2025 Kwakernaak obituary alone established.

## Claim: A contemporary 1975 Twente research trail exists for the population-optimal-control content Olsder describes, but it names no Chinese visitor

verifies: question-verify-song-jian-1975-twente-delegation-visit

Independent of Olsder's own memory, a documentary record shows the
research he says he described to [[entity-song-jian|Song Jian]] "over a
beer" in spring 1975 was a real, contemporaneously dated Twente output,
not a detail reconstructed after the fact. The published version of his
own paper — G.J. Olsder and [[entity-r-c-w-strijbos|R.C.W. Strijbos]],
"Population planning; a distributed time optimal control problem" (in
*Optimization Techniques Modeling and Optimization in the Service of Man,
Part 1*, Lecture Notes in Computer Science vol. 40, Springer, 1976,
pp. 721–735) — cites its own working-paper predecessor in its reference
list: "Olsder, G.J, and Strijbos, R.C.W.,; Population Planning; a
distributed time optimal control problem, Memorandum nr. 64, Twente
University of Technology, The Netherlands, 1975." The same reference list
cites a second, parallel 1975 Twente memorandum by
[[entity-huibert-kwakernaak|Huibert Kwakernaak]] — the professor originally
expected to receive the 1975 Chinese delegation (see next claim) —
"Kwakernaak, H.; Population policy as an optimal control problem,
Memorandum nr. 94, Twente University of Technology, The Netherlands, 1975
(in Dutch)."

A separate Kwakernaak paper, "Application of control theory to population
policy" (in *New Trends in Systems Analysis*, Lecture Notes in Control and
Information Sciences vol. 2, Springer, 1977, pp. 357–378) — the same
"Kwakernaak 1977" already on file in this vault as the paper Song Jian's
group cited in their own 1981 published argument
([[observation-kwakernaak-1977-citation-trail-sharpens-not-resolves-1975-dating-dispute]])
— documents a longer institutional lineage: Twente's Department of Applied
Mathematics had been producing internal student project reports titled
"Bevolkingspolitiek als optimaal besturingsprobleem" ("Population policy as
an optimal control problem") since December 1972, with successors in
January 1974 and March 1975, and Kwakernaak had popularized the same work
in a mainstream Dutch engineering trade journal that same year: "H.
Kwakernaak, 'Bevolkingspolitiek als optimaal besturingsprobleem'
(Population policy as an optimal control problem: in Dutch). *De
Ingenieur*, vol. 87, no. 46, pp. 911–917 (November 13, 1975)."

None of these five 1975-dated documents (two internal memoranda, one
student report, one trade-journal article, plus the 1972/1974 predecessor
reports) mentions Song Jian, a Chinese delegation, or any visitor by name
— they are internal and public records of the research program, not
records of who saw it or when. What they establish is narrower but real:
Twente's population-as-optimal-control research was an active, actively
published program throughout 1975, not a detail Olsder could only have
constructed by working backward from Song's later fame. This corroborates
the *plausibility and dating* of the content side of Olsder's account
without corroborating the *meeting* itself.

source_delight: "Kwakernaak's own reference list traces a five-year, five-document Twente research lineage on population control as an optimal-control problem (Dec. 1972 – Nov. 1975) that this vault had previously known only as a single 1977 citation — the paper trail behind the bar-conversation story turns out to run much deeper than one memorandum."

## Claim: No 1975 or 1978 record naming Song Jian or a Chinese delegation has been located; a newly located third telling by Olsder (Dec 2025) still rests on his own memory alone

verifies: question-verify-song-jian-1975-twente-delegation-visit

This session searched specifically for a contemporaneous documentary trace
of the meeting itself — correspondence, a trip report, a university visit
log, newspaper coverage of the 1975 delegation, or an IFAC 1978 Helsinki
delegate list naming Song Jian — and found none. What did surface is a
third independent telling of Olsder's own story, distinct from the 2024
U-Today interview already on file
([[claim-olsder-account-traces-song-jian-twente-contact-to-1975-delegation-visit]])
and the 2015 *Volkskrant* remarks: a *Historisch Nieuwsblad* feature by
named journalist and "China-deskundige" (China specialist) Fred Sengers,
first published 4 December 2025 and updated 23 July 2026. It repeats the
same core narrative — unannounced spring-1975 delegation, Olsder receiving
Song Jian, the Bastille beer conversation, Song's interest in the
population-growth research — and adds one specific detail absent from the
vault's existing sources: "Eigenlijk was professor Huibert Kwakernaak de
aangewezen persoon hem te ontvangen, maar hij was die dag afwezig. Daarom
kwam het verzoek bij Geert Jan Olsder terecht." ("Actually, professor
Huibert Kwakernaak was the person designated to receive him, but he was
absent that day. That is why the request landed with Geert Jan Olsder.")
This explains, for the first time in any source this vault holds, *why*
Olsder rather than the senior Kwakernaak ended up with Song Jian that
day — pure administrative contingency, not selection.

This is a new *telling*, not new *evidence*: it is Olsder's own memory
(now 81 years old per the article), recorded a third time, in a third
venue, fifty years after the event, and it neither cites nor appears aware
of any document from 1975 itself. It sharpens, rather than resolves, the
standing finding at
[[claim-olsder-1975-account-is-2008-retrospective-reconstruction]] that the
account exists only as retrospective testimony: the testimony has now
multiplied across three separate interviews (2015, 2024, 2025/26) without
ever anchoring to a document contemporaneous with 1975 or 1978. Separately,
this session attempted the two archival routes most likely to hold such a
document — the University of Twente's own Atlantis archive portal
(archive.utwente.nl, which holds transferred university records from
1962–1984 under access number 0381.3) and the Delpher Dutch newspaper
database — and confirmed both are JavaScript-rendered, client-side search
interfaces that return an empty result shell to this session's fetch
tooling; no query could actually be executed. This is a confirmed
methodological block, consistent with the 2026-09-05 session's finding on
the same routes, not a search that returned zero hits. The core question —
whether any 1975 or 1978 record independent of Olsder's memory corroborates
his account of the meeting itself — remains `[unverified — could not
confirm or deny after search]`.

## Further leads

- The two internal Twente memoranda themselves (Olsder & Strijbos, Memorandum nr. 64, 1975; Kwakernaak, Memorandum nr. 94, 1975) have not been located or read directly — only cited in later papers' bibliographies. A Twente library special-collections or Atlantis-archive search (once a route around the JS search wall is found) could locate the physical/scanned originals.
- Kwakernaak's November 1975 *De Ingenieur* article ("Bevolkingspolitiek als optimaal besturingsprobleem," vol. 87, no. 46, pp. 911–917) is a mainstream Dutch engineering-trade-journal piece on the exact research program — worth locating directly (KIVI/*De Ingenieur* archives) as it is the most publicly visible 1975 trace of the program and could show whether it discusses any foreign interest.
- Three 1972–1975 Twente student project reports on "Bevolkingspolitiek als optimaal besturingsprobleem" (J. Jeuring, Dec. 1972; A. Bosch-de Boer, Jan. 1974; B.H. Hoeksma, March 1975) are cited in Kwakernaak's 1977 Springer chapter's bibliography and represent an unexplored, longer research lineage behind the single 1976 Olsder/Strijbos paper the vault previously knew.
- The 7th IFAC World Congress (Helsinki, 1978) proceedings volumes are catalogued at HathiTrust (catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/000051376) but were not searched directly this session for a Chinese-delegate list.
- Dutch Wikipedia's summary of the Song Jian encounter describes the shared research as "population growth models based on partial differential equations" — consistent with, but a slightly different register from, the U-Today "study on population growth" phrasing; worth checking against Olsder's own later retellings for drift.
- Schiff Sovereign / "China Needs a Time Machine" (schiffsovereign.com, 22 Sept 2026, byline James Hickman) was checked directly and does NOT mention Olsder, Twente, or 1975 at all — despite an AI web-search summary attributing such content to it. Logged here as a caution: this session's WebSearch tool produced a fabricated-sounding synthesis for that query that did not match the fetched primary; treated per the Quote provenance rule and discarded rather than recorded.

## Entity candidates

- Huibert Kwakernaak — person — already an entity in this vault, but newly shown here as the *older, foundational* figure this whole episode is contingent on: he was the professor originally slated to receive the 1975 delegation, and his own 1975 memorandum and De Ingenieur article are the strongest contemporary Twente documents in this cluster, arguably a firmer anchor than Olsder's memory.
- Fred Sengers — person — named journalist and "China-deskundige," author of the newly located third Olsder telling (Historisch Nieuwsblad, Dec 2025/July 2026); worth tracking if he covers Song Jian or Chinese science policy elsewhere.
- De Ingenieur — concept/term — the Dutch engineering trade journal (KIVI) that carried Kwakernaak's November 1975 population-control article; a venue worth understanding as a channel through which Twente's optimal-control-population work reached a wider engineering public in 1975 itself.
- Twente University Memorandum series — concept — the internal working-paper numbering system (Memorandum nr. 64, nr. 94, etc.) that this session found cited but not itself locatable; understanding this series as a source type could unlock the underlying 1975 documents directly.
