**Bridge-seed check.** Searched `10-inbox/raw/` for any prior capture naming both
`claim-brooks-1986-memo-cites-dreyfus-as-rebuttal-target` and
`claim-werbos-authored-eia-natural-gas-market-model-documentation-1981`: none found.
Two adjacent-but-distinct siblings exist and were read for collision, not duplicated:
`2026-09-25-bipartite-two-things-this-vault-knows-in-different.md` (Isaacs 1951 ↔ Werbos
1988, a different pairing, verdict "real structural resemblance, no transmission path") and
`observation-brooks-werbos-cosine-085-pairing-is-embedding-false-friend.md` (a *different*
Brooks note paired against a *different* Werbos note at cosine 0.85, verdict "false friend,
no documented contact between the two men"). This capture's pairing — the 1986 memo against
the 1981 EIA documentation, cosine 0.84 — has not been investigated before.

Started from the less-familiar side (the EIA documentation is well established in the vault;
what was untested was whether the "Dreyfus" Brooks cites has any documented tie to Werbos's
world). It does — through a third person, not through Brooks or Werbos engaging each other.

**Verdict, stated up front:** not a false friend, but not a lineage between Brooks and Werbos
either. The two seed claims share a real, documented connecting figure — Stuart E. Dreyfus —
and, through him, a real, documented technical dispute over the very method (backpropagation)
central to Werbos's 1988 diagnosis of the gas-market model he had authored the EIA
documentation for. But nothing shows Brooks aware of that dispute, and nothing shows Dreyfus's
priority argument aimed at Brooks, robotics, or philosophy of mind. The mechanism is a shared
node, not a shared argument.

## Claim: The "Dreyfus" cited twice in Brooks's 1986 memo is, in its second citation, jointly authored by Stuart E. Dreyfus, not Hubert Dreyfus alone

*Claim type: historical/biographical (uncontested) → Tier 3-4 floor; met well above floor, Tier 1, own document read directly.*

AIM-899's reference list (read directly via extract_pdf, TLS verified) carries two Dreyfus
entries: "[Dreyfus 72] 'What Computers Can't Do: A critique of Artificial Reason', Hubert
Dreyfus, Harper Row, 1972" and "[Dreyfus 86] 'Why Computers May Never Think Like People',
Hubert and Stuart Dreyfus, Technology Review, January 1986." The vault's existing claim-note
([[claim-brooks-1986-memo-cites-dreyfus-as-rebuttal-target]]) already documents this pairing
and links [[entity-stuart-dreyfus]] inline, though no entity page for him exists yet. Half of
Brooks's citation target is therefore not the philosopher alone but a joint work with his
brother [[entity-stuart-dreyfus|Stuart Dreyfus]], a mathematician — Professor of Industrial
Engineering and Operations Research at UC Berkeley, per his own 1990 paper's byline (below) —
not a second philosopher.

## Claim: Stuart Dreyfus, the same man, separately disputes Paul Werbos's priority claim to backpropagation — the method whose 1988 application is inseparable from the Natural Gas Market Model Werbos documented for the EIA in 1981

*Claim type: specific technical-mechanism claim → Tier 1-2 required; met (Dreyfus's own 1990 paper, read directly via extract_pdf, TLS verified).*

In "Artificial Neural Networks, Back Propagation, and the Kelley-Bryson Gradient Procedure"
(*Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics* 13(5):926-928, AIAA, 1990), Stuart E. Dreyfus
argues that backpropagation is a rediscovery of a gradient-computation method Henry Kelley
(1960) and Arthur Bryson (1961) developed for rocket-trajectory optimal-control problems, and
that Dreyfus's own 1962 chain-rule derivation obtained "results of known Kelley-Bryson type"
before [[entity-paul-werbos|Werbos]]'s more commonly cited work: "proper credit for the BP
method of solution has not been accorded to Kelley and Bryson. Often the 1974 doctoral
dissertation of Werbos is cited as the earliest reference. Werbos independently developed a
derivation similar to that of Dreyfus, and considered feedforward dynamics more general than
the multistage model usually used in optimal control problems and neural network design that
we are considering here." Dreyfus credits Werbos's derivation as independent, not derivative —
this is a priority correction, not a plagiarism charge.

The method under dispute — backpropagation, generalized by Werbos into what he called "dynamic
feedback" — is exactly the mathematics [[claim-werbos-1988-doe-affiliation-and-gas-market-test-case|Werbos's
1988 paper applied to the Natural Gas Market Model]] to locate "sources of forecast
uncertainty related to the use of least squares to estimate the model parameters," three years
after [[claim-werbos-authored-eia-natural-gas-market-model-documentation-1981|Werbos had authored
the model's official EIA documentation]] in 1981. The vault already holds this exact Dreyfus
1990 document and this exact "proper credit... Kelley and Bryson" quote, read independently in
a different capture ([[claim-kelley-bryson-optimal-control-precursor]]) that traces the
Kelley-Bryson-Dreyfus-Werbos backpropagation-priority dispute in detail; this capture's
distinct contribution is identifying that the "Dreyfus" in that dispute and the "Dreyfus" in
Brooks's rebuttal-target citation are the same named individual.

## Claim: The connection is real but mediated — nothing shows Brooks aware of the Kelley-Bryson-Werbos dispute, and nothing shows Dreyfus's priority argument addressed to Brooks or Werbos's DOE work

*Claim type: historical/biographical (uncontested negative) → Tier 3-4 floor; met, Tier 1, both primaries read directly and checked for cross-reference.*

Brooks's AIM-899 (read in full above) contains no mention of optimal control, Kelley, Bryson,
Werbos, or backpropagation — its argument against Dreyfus is philosophical (embodiment,
"holistic techniques," anti-representationalism), unrelated to the control-theory priority
question. Stuart Dreyfus's 1990 paper (read in full above) contains no mention of Brooks,
robotics, subsumption architecture, or philosophy of mind — its argument is a mathematical
credit-attribution claim about gradient-descent history. Neither document engages the other's
subject. This is consistent with, and does not contradict, the vault's separate finding
([[observation-brooks-werbos-cosine-085-pairing-is-embedding-false-friend]]) that a *different*
Brooks-note/Werbos-note pairing at cosine 0.85 is a false friend with no documented contact
between Brooks and Werbos directly — that finding still holds. What this capture adds is one
level removed: Brooks and Werbos never meet, but Brooks's cited co-author and Werbos's
priority rival are the same person, and that person's rival claim concerns the exact method
Werbos later ran against his own government report. A genuine bridge exists; it just isn't the
bridge the two seed claims' surface vocabulary would suggest (neither "robots" nor "gas
markets" appears on either side of it).

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> This is the interesting middle case the false-friend taxonomy doesn't quite have a slot for. It isn't nothing — Stuart Dreyfus is a real, verifiable, two-hop connector, not a coincidence of embeddings. But it isn't the vocabulary-free "mechanism" the topic asked to hunt for either, because a mechanism implies the two seed claims' *events* interact, and they don't: Brooks never read the Kelley-Bryson dispute, and Dreyfus never weighed in on subsumption architecture. What connects them is a person wearing two unrelated hats thirty years apart — brother-and-co-author to one critic, priority rival to one engineer — and the vault's retrieval index caught the wallpaper (Dreyfus, 1980s, a rebuttal posture) without ever seeing the person standing in both rooms. Finding him doesn't resolve the pairing into a tidy "confirmed" or "false friend"; it resolves it into something more honest: a real edge in the graph that the two claims themselves never draw.

## Further leads

- Stuart Dreyfus co-authored a 2000 paper (Mizutani, Dreyfus & Nishio, IJCNN) formally deriving MLP backprop as a "simplified version" of the Kelley-Bryson formula — already vault-documented at [[claim-backprop-special-case-kelley-bryson-formula]]; worth eventually linking that note's `entity-stuart-dreyfus` mentions together once the entity page exists.
- Werbos's 1988 paper's own body text (pp. 341-356) names neither Kelley, Bryson, nor Dreyfus by name in its technical sections ([[claim-werbos-1988-body-pp-350-355-names-no-isaacs-bellman-pontryagin-kelley-or-bryson]], [[claim-werbos-1988-reference-list-names-no-isaacs-bellman-pontryagin-kelley-or-bryson]]) — so Werbos does not engage Dreyfus's priority argument in print either, a possible mirror-image negative worth its own note.
- [[moc-backpropagation-origins]] already collects the Kelley/Bryson/Dreyfus/Werbos priority-dispute cluster; this capture's Brooks-citation angle is not yet linked from that MOC.
- Brooks's later works (1991 IWR, 2002 *Flesh and Machines*) have their own separate, already-tracked Dreyfus-citation history ([[claim-brooks-1991-does-not-cite-dreyfus]], [[claim-brooks-2002-book-credits-dreyfus-per-dreyfus-2007-quote]]); not re-checked here for a second Stuart Dreyfus mention.

## Entity candidates

- Henry Kelley — person — the earlier, foundational 1960 control-theory figure Stuart Dreyfus's argument measures Werbos against; no entity page exists yet despite multiple claim-notes resting on his priority.
- Arthur Bryson — person — co-foundational alongside Kelley in the same 1960-61 gradient-method priority claim; same blind spot as Kelley.
- Stuart Dreyfus — person — already wikilinked from an existing claim-note as `entity-stuart-dreyfus` but has no page; this capture is the second vault thread (after the Kelley-Bryson cluster) resting weight on him and he still lacks a page.
- Kelley-Bryson gradient procedure — concept — the named object of the priority dispute; distinct from "backpropagation" as a term and worth its own concept note given how much vault material already turns on the distinction.
- Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics (AIAA) — venue — an aerospace-engineering venue carrying a direct, load-bearing AI-history priority correction; notable because the correction lives entirely outside AI publishing.
