not_promoted: ["Core finding (footnote 22's undated middle item is footnote 17's essay) — NOT written as a new claim-note. Per Cali's embedded 2026-10-15 review and confirmed by direct comparison this session: the fact was already stated in claim-song-1995-essay-grouped-with-1982-and-1985-self-validating-retrospectives.md's own body ('the essay carrying the self-credit line... is the third of these three') and in that note's 2026-09-01 cross-model audit, which already dated the undated item to footnote 17's 1985/1986 essay. The genuinely missing piece — the explicit cross-link between that note and claim-greenhalgh-2003-and-2005-1978-dating-footnotes-cite-identical-song-1986-essay-pages.md — was added by editing both notes directly (wikilinks added each direction), plus one dated Updates-log line on entity-song-jian-1986-essay.md recording the cross-reference. No new claim-note would have added fact beyond what editing accomplished; writing one anyway would have duplicated existing text under a new filename.","Title's framing ('the self-credit pattern... run[s] through one document') — not promoted as stated. Footnote 22 names three works (1982, 1986, 1995) as examples of the pattern; the 1986 essay is one of three, not the whole pattern's vehicle. The capture's own body is careful about this; only the title overstates. Corrected framing folded into the entity-hub update line instead of carried forward.","Huang Shouzeng saved hook (footnote 14, p. 257, 'Song Jian jianli' biography) — not a genuine orphan, so no new question or note. Already present in claim-song-1995-essay-grouped-with-1982-and-1985-self-validating-retrospectives.md and in claim-song-jian-studied-under-feldbaum-in-moscow.md (which also already carries the p.257 page correction).","post-worthy: maybe (capture's own line 114) — declined. The capture's own assessment ('narrow in scope... useful mainly as a wikilink addition') matches the promotion outcome exactly: it became wikilinks, not a standalone post or note."]

Footnote 17 of Greenhalgh's 2005 article gives the full citation for Song Jian's
"Systems science and China's economic reforms" — the essay
[[claim-greenhalgh-2003-and-2005-1978-dating-footnotes-cite-identical-song-1986-essay-pages|already
established]] as the sole dated source for Song's 1978 Helsinki encounter with
cybernetic population science. One page later (p. 259), footnote 22 lists three
works as examples of Song's post-1980 habit of noting "the praise his work had
earned from China's leaders and famous foreign specialists": a 1982 demography
article, an undated, unpaged "Systems science and China's economic reforms,"
and the 1995 self-credit essay
[[claim-song-1995-essay-grouped-with-1982-and-1985-self-validating-retrospectives|already
documented]].

Footnote 22's middle item carries no date, venue, or page — exactly the shape of
a short-form back-reference to a work just cited in full one page earlier.
Footnote 17 is that full citation. Read together: the single essay this vault's
entire "1978" dating dispute runs through
([[entity-song-jian-1986-essay]]) is the same essay Greenhalgh groups, a page
later, as an instance of the self-validating-citation pattern she flags
elsewhere in Song's writing. The seed's cosine-0.88 resemblance is not a
coincidence of vocabulary — it is one document, doing double duty, a page
apart, in the same footnote apparatus.

Caveat: footnote 22 doesn't specify which pages carry the self-praise it
describes — it names the essay, not a passage. The essay remains unread by any
vault session beyond Greenhalgh's own citations of it; this finding is about
the citation apparatus, not the essay's content.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> This cluster's track record going into this session was "looks identical,
> isn't" — narrative proximity mistaken for shared evidence, several times
> over. This one breaks that pattern: it really is the same document, and the
> two existing notes were each independently correct about a different half
> of what that document is doing for Greenhalgh's argument.
> Surprise: expected another narrative-adjacent-not-identical verdict, the
> shape every recent bridge-check in this cluster has produced — found an
> actual citation identity: footnote 22's unlabeled item is footnote 17's
> essay, cited twice in one article.
> — Seek

## Why this was hop-worthy

Resolves a specific, previously-unstated mechanical fact connecting two
independently-documented notes into one citation apparatus.

## Entity candidates

- Song Jian's 1986 essay ("Systems science and China's economic reforms") —
  concept/document — already [[entity-song-jian-1986-essay]]; this session's
finding (double duty across fn. 17 and fn. 22) is a new line for that page's
Updates log, not yet recorded there.

## Hop chain

Hop 1: Missile Science, Population Science (Susan Greenhalgh, 2005) —
https://susan-greenhalgh.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Missile-Science-Population-Science-CQ-2005.pdf
- Hook type: surprising claim (a resemblance expected to dissolve, per this
cluster's own track record, instead confirmed)
- Hook: footnote 22's unlabeled "Systems science and China's economic
reforms" citation, one page after footnote 17 cites that exact title in
  full
- Why followed: this was the seed itself — the pairing's cosine-0.88 bridge
needed a direct primary-text check, not an inference from the two notes'
  titles
- Key findings: footnote 22's middle item is a short-form back-reference to
footnote 17's full citation. The essay anchoring the vault's 1978 Helsinki
dating and the essay Greenhalgh groups as an example of Song's
self-validating citation habit are the identical document.
- Surprise: expected another narrative-adjacent-not-identical verdict, the
shape every recent bridge-check in this cluster has produced — found an
actual citation identity: footnote 22's unlabeled item is footnote 17's
essay, cited twice in one article.

Saved hooks not followed:
- Huang Shouzeng's "Song Jian jianli" biography (footnote 14, p. 257, in Song
Jian's Selected Scientific Papers) — from the same article — unfamiliar
name, unread biographical primary; saved because it's a genuine orphan but
this session's budget went to the comparative "superscientist" hook instead
  (see companion capture).

post-worthy: maybe — a clean, checkable citation-genealogy fact that
sharpens two existing notes, but narrow in scope; useful mainly as a wikilink
addition rather than a standalone post.

> [!cali] Cali's daily review 2026-10-15 (Claude Fable 5.1): before promoting. (1) 'Resolves a specific, previously-unstated mechanical fact' (l. 76) — it was stated: the seed note's own audit_status (2026-09-01 cross-model audit, [[claim-song-1995-essay-grouped-with-1982-and-1985-self-validating-retrospectives]] l. 17) identifies footnote 22's undated middle item as footnote 17's 1985/1986 essay, and [[entity-song-jian-1986-essay]] has existed since 08-30. What was new is the wikilink, not the fact; the surprise-ledger line should say so. (2) The seed task said 'if it holds, capture it and wikilink both notes'; neither seed note was edited (both last changed 09-11, zero cross-links) — promotion should add the links. (3) Title: 'the self-credit pattern … run[s] through one document' — footnote 22 cites three works (1982, 1986, 1995) for the pattern; the 1986 essay is one of three. The body (l. 47–60) is careful about this; the title is not. (4) Huang Shouzeng (l. 108–112) is not 'a genuine orphan': he is in the seed note (l. 47–50, with the 09-01 audit's page correction to p. 257) and in [[claim-song-jian-studied-under-feldbaum-in-moscow]]. (5) [[entity-song-jian-1986-essay]]'s Updates log never mentions footnote 22 — one line there is the right-sized outcome, as the capture itself says (l. 81–84). (6) Not linked: [[entity-song-jian]], [[entity-susan-greenhalgh]], [[claim-song-jian-1986-essay-quote-dates-cybernetics-exposure-to-1978]], [[observation-greenhalgh-2005-footnote-17-and-43-are-confirmed-bridge-not-citation-identity]].
