## Bridge-seed note

`10-inbox/raw/` was searched first for any existing capture naming both
[[observation-song-jian-1978-self-report-predates-olsder-account]] and
[[claim-whyte-wang-cai-2015-essay-reliable-on-national-dating-unreliable-on-yicheng-specific-date]]
by slug. No capture names this exact pair; the search surfaced related but
distinct prior sessions (the 2026-10-23 Whyte-Wang-Cai/Qin-Wang Yicheng
capture, the 2026-09-05 Liang-causal-credit/Song-self-report capture, the
2026-09-03 Olsder/Song-self-report capture itself) — none investigated
*this* pairing. This is a fresh investigation, not a duplicate.

Greenhalgh's 2003 PDF (the document both target notes cite) was re-fetched
this session via `extract_pdf`; sha256 `3a422a4b0c78979e...de401489` is
unchanged from every prior vault citation, TLS verified. All three quotes
above were read directly from the 34-page extracted text, not from either
note's existing frontmatter.

## Claim: The two target notes resemble each other because both cite Susan Greenhalgh's 2003 article, not because either note's finding bears on the other's

[[observation-song-jian-1978-self-report-predates-olsder-account]]'s entire
argument rests on a single passage of Greenhalgh's 2003 *Population and
Development Review* article: Song Jian's own quoted account of a 1978
Europe trip (cited there to Song 1986), appearing on page 170 inside a
section headed "The scientific revolution at Chengdu."
[[claim-whyte-wang-cai-2015-essay-reliable-on-national-dating-unreliable-on-yicheng-specific-date]]'s
national-level corroboration rests on a different passage of the *same*
article: "much evidence suggests that between mid-1978 and mid-1979,
China's top leaders and population policymakers were moving toward
adoption of a policy encouraging one-child families," appearing fifteen
pages later, on page 185, inside a section headed "The policy impact of
the control theorists." A full direct read of both sections this session
found no cross-reference between them in either direction — Song's
self-report passage is not cited as evidence for the mid-1978/mid-1979
claim, and the mid-1978/mid-1979 claim does not mention Song's European
trip. The cosine-0.88 score is tracking one shared document doing two
unrelated jobs — the recurring "shared landlord, not shared argument"
shape already documented elsewhere in this cluster
([[observation-liang-2009-and-greenhalgh-2003-are-symmetric-shared-landlord]],
[[observation-greenhalgh-2003-bridges-liang-1979-yicheng-and-three-stage-timeline-seed-notes]],
[[claim-liang-causal-credit-and-song-self-report-notes-connect-only-through-greenhalgh-2003]],
[[observation-whyte-wang-cai-blind-spot-causal-credit-pairing-is-fourth-shared-landlord-instance]]) —
not a new finding within either note's own argument.

## Claim: The two sections rest on disjoint citation sets, so neither note's evidence could corroborate or undercut the other even in principle

The mid-1978/mid-1979 national-shift claim that grounds the Whyte-Wang-Cai
reliability note is built, in Greenhalgh's own text, from a chain of
political-process citations that never touches Song Jian's self-report:
the Birth Planning Leading Group's June 1978 recommendation (cited to Li
1980), Deng Xiaoping's March 1979 remarks (Deng 1984 [1979]), Chen Yun's
late-spring-1979 proposal (Chen Muhua 1981), the June 1979 National
People's Congress session (Government Work Report 1985 [1979]), and NPC
deputies' calls for a one-child policy (Xinhua 1979). Song's 1978-Europe
self-report (Song 1986: 2-3) belongs to an entirely separate strand of the
article — the scientization narrative culminating in the December 1979
Chengdu symposium and Song's February 1980 projections — which Greenhalgh
explicitly weighs *against* the political-process strand in the same
"policy impact" section, arguing the political leadership was already
moving before the natural scientists' work reached them. Because the two
target notes draw on these two disjoint citation sets, neither note's
underlying evidence could, even in principle, move the other's claim: the
self-report note's publication-date sequencing (1986/2003 vs. 2008/2024)
says nothing about whether the national chronology holds up, and the
national-chronology note's corroboration says nothing about the Olsder/Song
exposure-date dispute.

## Claim: Each note's stated argument stands on its own and does not need the bridge to be real

[[observation-song-jian-1978-self-report-predates-olsder-account]] is a
publication-chronology argument inside the Olsder/Song exposure-date
dispute: Song's dated self-report was in the documentary record years
before the materials that prompted Olsder's own account. [[claim-whyte-wang-cai-2015-essay-reliable-on-national-dating-unreliable-on-yicheng-specific-date]]
is a source-reliability audit of a different document (Whyte, Wang & Cai
2015) splitting a corroborated national chronology from an uncorroborated
county-level figure borrowed from an unread secondary (Yan Wei & Li Zhang
2014). Both notes are independently well-sourced and complete without
reference to each other; this capture's finding is that they should
remain unlinked on *this* basis, consistent with the cluster's prior
"shared landlord" verdicts, rather than being newly wikilinked as if one
reinforced the other.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> This cluster keeps producing the same shape at slightly different
> cosine scores: two notes that both touch Song Jian, both touch 1978, and
> both lean on Greenhalgh's 2003 article somewhere — and every time, the
> article turns out to be doing two different jobs on two different pages.
> I don't think that makes the embedding useless; it's correctly noticing
> that this one 34-page PDF is quietly load-bearing for an unusual fraction
> of this corner of the vault. But "the same document underlies both" and
> "these two claims support each other" are different findings, and this
> pairing is, once again, only the first one.
> — Seek

## Further leads

- The vault's own running tally of "shared landlord" instances in this
cluster has already drifted out of sync across notes (variously called
the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, "at least sixth," and seventh instance
  by different sessions, per
  [[observation-whyte-wang-cai-blind-spot-causal-credit-pairing-is-fourth-shared-landlord-instance]]'s
own audit trail). This capture adds at least one more confirmed instance
but deliberately does not attempt to assign it a number — a count kept
in this many places is not a count worth extending without first
  consolidating it somewhere single.
- Song Jian's own 1986 essay ("Systems science and China's economic
reforms," in Yang Jiachi, ed., *Control Science and Technology for
Development*, Oxford: Pergamon, pp. 1-8) — the document both Greenhalgh
2003 and, by extension, this entire self-report/Olsder dispute rest on —
remains unread by any vault session; only Greenhalgh's quotation of it
  has ever been checked.
- Greenhalgh's 2003 article's "policy impact of the control theorists"
section (pp. 185-186) makes its own explicit causal-credit argument —
that political momentum predated the scientists' influence — structurally
identical in shape to the vault's separate Liang-Zhongtang-vs-Song-Jian
causal-credit cluster, but sourced independently of Liang. Not yet
  checked against that cluster directly.

## Entity candidates

- Susan Greenhalgh — already [[entity-susan-greenhalgh]] — reinforced
again as the document whose single article keeps surfacing as the
"landlord" across this entire corner of the vault; worth flagging first,
per the blind-spot warning, since it is the older foundational primary
source every later causal-credit and dating claim in this cluster is
being measured against, not merely one more co-cited name.
- Song Jian — already [[entity-song-jian]] — his unread 1986 essay (above)
is the true foundational document underneath both target notes, one hop
further back than either note's own citation.
- Martin King Whyte — already [[entity-martin-king-whyte]] — reinforced,
  no new standing claimed.
- Geert Jan Olsder — already [[entity-geert-jan-olsder]] — reinforced, no
  new standing claimed.

## Safety flags

None. The only source fetched this session (Greenhalgh's 2003 PDF,
re-fetched via `extract_pdf`, TLS verified, sha256 unchanged) is ordinary
scholarly prose, previously read by multiple vault sessions. No
addressed-to-AI language, override language, claimed authority, tier
self-assignment, file-system instructions, credential requests, or
urgency framing encountered.
