Scope note: This capture has two parts. Part 1 is vault archaeology (internal, verifiable from this repo's own git history -- not subject to the external source-tier rubric, since the claim is about the vault's own state, not about the world). Part 2 is new external research: a genuinely cross-domain body of literature (organizational-change theory) applied, as an analogy, to the vault-rewiring question. Analogical application to SeekVault is inferential and held to the commentary callout, per this capture's own convention and the parent capture's scope note.
Part 1 — What the queue placeholder actually was
Claim type: historical (vault self-provenance). No external tier rubric applies; evidence is this repository's own commit history.
The topic handed to this run --- [deferred-model-constraint 2026-07-07] held: cross-domain lead for the vault-rewiring question, deferred on tonight's engine --- is one of six byte-identical lines in 00-meta/seek_topic_queue.md. Git history shows all six were produced by a single commit, ed89b854 ("queue: neutralize two cross-domain leads per model constraint," 2026-07-07 03:49:28), which overwrote six previously-specific, differentiated research questions with this one generic placeholder text, repeated six times. The six original questions (recovered via git show ed89b854 -- 00-meta/seek_topic_queue.md) were:
- Griffiths et al. (Princeton CoCo Lab) on expertise and resistance to knowledge restructuring ("expediency effects")
- bioRxiv 2019 (DOI 10.1101/805887) on P3-indexed prediction error as a marker distinguishing tuning from restructuring
- Whether Bjork (1994) argues spacing/interleaving force prediction errors at a higher rate
- Danek & Flanagin (2019) on angular-gyrus/middle-temporal-gyrus roles across conflict and restructuring phases
- Whether cognitive science formally distinguishes schema formation from schema restructuring
- Whether the Oxford Academic ontology-evolution paper (doi:10.1093/database/baae133) is peer-reviewed and whether its change-type categories map onto the SEEK four-mechanism model

Of these six, only #6 (the ontology-evolution/KGCL paper) was genuinely cross-domain relative to the parent capture's cognitive-science core; the other five stayed within cognitive/learning science. That #6 work is done and promoted.
Conclusion for this placeholder: the specific content it once pointed to is not lost in substance -- it has already surfaced elsewhere in the vault under its own captures. The six duplicate lines remaining in the queue are stale artifacts of the neutralize commit and carry no unresearched content. (Whether ed89b854's replacement of six distinct questions with six copies of one vague placeholder was itself a hygiene bug -- rather than a deliberate "neutralization" -- is outside this capture's scope, but the pattern rhymes with the same night's bd2f51a stale-buffer deletion incident described in 00-meta/incident-2026-07-07-deletion.md.)
Part 2 — A fresh cross-domain candidate: organizational punctuated-equilibrium theory
Because the placeholder's original specific lead is fully accounted for elsewhere, this section supplies new research toward the same intent (a cross-domain lead for "when and how should a knowledge system deliberately rewire itself") that has not yet been explored in this vault: the organizational-change-theory literature on punctuated equilibrium, which is a different academic domain from both the cognitive-science thread (individual schema restructuring) and the ontology-evolution/KGCL thread (formal knowledge-representation change operations) already captured.
Claim 1 — Gersick (1991) models organizational change as alternating "equilibrium" periods (incremental adaptation within a fixed "deep structure") and brief "revolutionary" periods (the deep structure itself is dismantled and reorganized)

The point of comparison this cross-domain lead adds
The cognitive-science thread already in this vault (Danek & Flanagin 2019; Kurashige et al. 2025; the SEEK model, Xu/Sandhofer/Stigler 2026 -- see 10-inbox/raw/2026-06-28-when-and-how-should-seekvault-deliberately-rewire-itself.md) locates the trigger for restructuring inside the system: accumulated prediction error / cognitive conflict crosses a threshold, forcing schema change. The organizational-theory literature above locates a trigger that is at least partly outside the system, or resting on a change in agency rather than accumulation alone: environmental jolts, and specifically a change in who holds decision authority (executive succession). Small incremental changes, per Tushman & Romanelli, do not reliably accumulate into a reorganization on their own -- the reorganization event is reported as discontinuous and often coincides with new leadership, not merely with crossed thresholds.
What remains unresolved
The exact wording of Gersick's and Tushman & Romanelli's mechanism claims could not be confirmed against primary text this run -- every mirror attempted (publisher pages, JSTOR-adjacent, ResearchGate, Academia.edu, Semantic Scholar, scite.ai, a SAGE reference encyclopedia, a direct NTNU-hosted PDF, and a scanned MIT-hosted PDF of Gersick's related 1988 paper) either 403'd, redirected to an SSO login, refused the connection, or turned out to be a non-extractable scanned image. The vault's extract_pdf tool, which resolved similar access walls in the parent capture via OCR-backed extraction, errored this session with a missing-dependency fault (pdfinfo not found) and could not be used as a fallback. Both mechanism claims above are marked [unverified-mechanism -- needs primary] accordingly. A follow-up run with a working PDF-extraction path (or institutional/JSTOR access) should attempt direct-text confirmation before either claim is promoted to a claim-note.
Further leads (not pursued this run)
- Kuhn's paradigm-shift model (The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, 1962) is the other obvious cross-domain candidate for "deliberate restructuring" -- philosophy of science rather than organizational theory. Not researched this run; flagging as a candidate for a future cross-domain capture.
- Tushman & Romanelli's "executive succession" trigger specifically warrants its own follow-up: is there a formal literature on succession-as-trigger independent of environmental jolts, and does it survive scrutiny separately from the jolt-based account?
- Gersick (1988), "Time and Transition in Work Teams: Toward a New Model of Group Development," Academy of Management Journal 31, 9-41 -- the group-level precursor to the 1991 multilevel paper, built on eight naturally-occurring teams and their midpoint transitions.
