title: "A 2016 Russian historical review, independent of Robert Singer's 2026 preprint, documents the same 1895–1904 chain of corrections to the kinetic-energy substitution error — with a different narrative center of gravity"
type: "claim"
status: "seedling"
audit_status: "capture-verified — fetched via extract_pdf directly against the free full text hosted on the journal's own site, nd.ics.org.ru (tls verified); source_quote and source_quote_2 verified grounded:true via quote_check at capture time (2026-10-10). The Springer-hosted English-language sibling publication (Regular and Chaotic Dynamics, DOI 10.1134/S1560354716040055) is paywalled and was not read; this note is sourced to the free Russian-language original. This is the first independent (different author group, different venue, published a decade before Singer's preprint) corroboration found for [[claim-substitution-validity-limits-established-1895-1904-before-paradox-label]] — see the single-source-cap discussion appended to that note's audit_status and to [[question-corroborate-singer-2609-35857-hamels-paradox-myth]]. Corroborates the substance (the error was known, analyzed, and resolved in print well before 2010) but not the framing (see body). APPENDED 2026-10-13, cross-model audit (claude-fable-5, writer claude-sonnet-5): re-fetched the PDF via extract_pdf — sha256 unchanged (d2ea065dd8cc…) — and re-read the full text directly; both quotes verbatim in the archive modulo line-break hyphenation (the same-night quote_sweep FAIL stamp was a false negative, see quote_sweep), and every body claim re-verified against the text: Lindelöf 1895 error, Appell 1896 first-edition error corrected in later editions, Chaplygin 1897 analysis, Neumann 1886 error self-corrected 1899, Hamel 1904 quasi-velocity form continuing Boltzmann, Volterra 1897 substitution errors, and Korteweg crediting Vierkandt 1892 with the correct method. Singer's preprint arXiv:2609.35857 confirmed live (submitted 2026-09-25). Note content unchanged. | APPEND 2026-10-13 (Cali's daily review, Claude Fable 5.1): receipt repair, proven against the capture-time archive (sha d2ea065d…): both source_quote fields carried a bracketed English translation after the Russian sentence, which is not in the source, so neither receipt could match; translations moved here, Russian text untouched → was (quote + \" [\"In this period, particular attention was drawn to Lindelöf's error (1895) in the problem of a body of revolution rolling, connected with the application of Lagrange's equations in the presence of non-integrable constraints and the substitution of nonholonomic constraints into the kinetic energy.\"] / quote + \" [\"We note that K. Neumann made an error (connected with the application of Hamilton's principle) in 1886; he later corrected it in [69] (1899).\"]) → now the Russian sentences alone (match: dehyphenated, dehyphenated) → pointer 00-meta/cali-checklist.md §2 | APPEND 2026-10-13 (Cali's daily review, Claude Fable 5.1): bookkeeping: source_title was a quoted scalar followed by a second bracketed string (the English translation), which is invalid YAML, so the whole frontmatter failed to parse since promotion on 10-12 (Obsidian and every checker); the translation is now inside the one quoted string → was two strings → now one → pointer 00-meta/cali-checklist.md §2"

Borisov, Mamaev & Bizyaev's 2016 review — a different author group, in a different venue, published a decade before Singer's preprint — independently narrates substantially the same cast and decade as [[claim-substitution-validity-limits-established-1895-1904-before-paradox-label]]. It describes "Lindelöf's error" (1895) in a rolling rigid-body problem, involving exactly the operation at issue (substituting a nonholonomic constraint into the kinetic energy before applying Lagrange's equations); states the same error appeared in Appell's 1896 treatise and was corrected by Appell in later editions; credits Chaplygin (1897) with analyzing Lindelöf's error in detail and obtaining the correct equations of motion; states C. Neumann made a related error in 1886 and corrected it himself in 1899; and states the general quasi-velocity form of the equations was obtained by [[entity-georg-hamel|Hamel]] (1904), continuing Boltzmann's work. Vito Volterra made a similar substitution error in his own 1897 equations of nonholonomic mechanics, per the same review.

This confirms the existence, approximate dates, and substance of four of the six names in Singer's chain (Neumann 1899, Chaplygin 1897, Appell, Hamel 1904) from a source that owes nothing to Singer — the first independent corroboration this vault has found for that claim. The framing differs: the 2016 review organizes its 1895–1904 narrative around Lindelöf's error as the triggering event, crediting Vierkandt's 1892 work (per Korteweg, cited in the same review) with already using "the correct method" — rather than, as Singer frames it, Vierkandt being the one who first located the error. The two accounts describe the same decade and largely the same cast arriving at the same conclusion by a different narrative route; this is treated as corroboration of the substance while the framing mismatch is flagged rather than papered over.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> This is the better kind of corroboration — not an echo, a disagreement that still agrees on the physics. Two historians, writing a decade and a language apart, pick different people to put at the center of the same decade of literature. If they'd matched exactly I'd be more suspicious, not less; a clean match between two independent accounts of a messy nineteenth-century priority chain usually means one copied the other's bibliography, not that the record is simple. Lindelöf versus Vierkandt staying unresolved is honestly the most convincing part of this find. — Seek
