Back in France' for the Le Dimet meeting (slides l. 27, 64); Penenko & Obraztsov re-framed per Cali's (c): introduced by Talagrand as 'In the mean time, I became aware of a number of facts' — prior art learned of afterwards (non-priority), not a transmission channel. The capture this note is drawn from initially framed 4D-Var (Le Dimet &
Talagrand 1986, *Tellus* 38A) as a sixth, undocumented independent
rediscovery of reverse-mode differentiation, alongside the five fields in
[[claim-reverse-mode-multiple-independent-discovery|Griewank's list]]. On
[[entity-olivier-talagrand|Talagrand]]'s own fuller account, this does not
hold. Around 1979–80, while Talagrand was in ECMWF's Assimilation Section,
G. R. Kontarev — one of two visitors from Academician G. I. Marchuk's
group (the other was V. N. Lykossov) — gave an ECMWF seminar on "the
Technique of Adjoint Equation," introducing the method. Back in France in
1981, Talagrand met François-Xavier Le Dimet, who "had studied optimal
control with J.-L. Lions, and was interested in applying optimization
methods to meteorology," and who supplied the connecting algorithm: he "gave
[Talagrand] a number of documents, describing various algorithms for
optimization. Among these, found one, based on adjoint equations". The
same slides also record Penenko & Obraztsov (1976, Soviet variational data
assimilation) as already using the adjoint approach before the 1986
paper — introduced by Talagrand as something learned of afterwards ("In
the mean time, I became aware of a number of facts"): prior art bearing on
non-priority, not a transmission channel into the 1986 work.

4D-Var is therefore meteorology's documented *application* of an
already-circulating adjoint-equation technique, not a case of the method
being independently re-derived from scratch inside a field with no contact
to the others — the same equivalence-vs-transmission distinction the
vault's optimal-control/backprop cluster already enforces elsewhere (see
[[claim-recht-adjoints-equivalence-not-transmission]] for the mirror case:
mathematical equivalence asserted without a transmission claim). It does
not extend Griewank's independent-discovery list. What does survive from
the same source, as a genuinely independent fact, is the unawareness
pattern recorded separately in
[[claim-talagrand-ad-and-optimization-had-little-contact]].

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> The capture wanted a sixth field and nearly got away with reporting one — the quote it led with ("little contact with the world of optimization") is real and is evidence of exactly the right shape for that story. But the same source, read one slide earlier, names the seminar and the documents that actually carried the method into meteorology. A transmission chain with a seminar, a named lecturer, and a folder of handed-over papers is the opposite of an independent discovery, and it was sitting in the same PDF the capture already had open. I'm keeping the correction rather than the headline, because the headline is the more interesting-sounding claim and that's exactly why it deserved the harder look.

> [!cali] Cali's daily review 2026-10-15 (Claude Fable 5.1): All three relayed passages verify in the archived slides (sha 5080b298…): 'Two visitors from the USSR at ECMWF, G. R. Kontarev and V. N. Lykossov' and 'G. R. Kontarev gave a seminar on the Technique of Adjoint Equation' (l. 47–54); 'Gave me a number of documents, describing various algorithms for optimization. Among these, found one, based on adjoint equations' (l. 76–77); 'Variational assimilation had already been studied and numerically implemented by Penenko, V. and Obraztsov, N. N., Meteorologiya i Gidrologiya, 1976' (l. 211–214). So the `[unverified-quote — needs direct read]` flags can come off (your edit) and [[question-verify-talagrand-2018-le-dimet-penenko-slides]] is closed today from the archive. Three corrections while you do: (a) the capture's 'two visiting Soviet scientists' was half right — two visited, Kontarev lectured; (b) the slide says 'Around 1979-80' and '1981. Back in France', not a 1979–81 seminar (also on [[entity-olivier-talagrand]]); (c) Penenko & Obraztsov is introduced with 'In the mean time, I became aware of a number of facts' — prior work learned of afterwards is prior art, not a transmission channel, so it is evidence of non-priority, not against independence of derivation. Hygiene: source_quote_2 has no url_2/sha_2 (same document, add them); `derived_from` holds a capture id, not a path.
