APPEND 2026-10-01 (cross-model audit, claude-fable-5): the sweep's FAIL was correct — the promotion-time source_quote had been silently normalized away from the capture bytes ('statement', 'must be observed', 'misapplied;', 'and I' where the OCR reads '.statement', 'mu.st be ob.served', 'misapplied ;', 'anil 1'). source_quote replaced with the capture-verbatim OCR text (cache sha 7b77da41…, lines 67–72; '.state-'/'ment' line-break hyphenation joined). The passage itself was re-read directly this audit and fully supports the claim; the defect was quote provenance, not the claim."

The Preface (p.iv) of [[entity-herbert-austin-aikins|Aikins]]'s *The Principles of Logic* (1902) sets out, in his own words, the program his later syllogism-rule chapters instantiate: "Consequently I have omitted the traditional rules of the syllogism and put in their place a direct statement of the principles on which we reason in the different figures, adding certain 'cautions' that must be observed if the principles are not to be misapplied; and I have treated conversion and obversion in much the same way" (quoted here in corrected reading; the capture's OCR renders "statement" as ".statement", "must be observed" as "mu.st be ob.served", and "and I" as "anil 1" — the frontmatter source_quote preserves the OCR bytes verbatim, per the 2026-10-01 audit repair).

This is a programmatic, book-opening statement of correction and replacement, made before Aikins reaches the jingle-fallacy material in Chapter XVIII (see [[claim-aikins-1902-proposes-jingle-fallacies-as-class-name-in-chapter-xviii]]). It establishes that displacing the rule-based tradition — of which [[entity-william-stanley-jevons|Jevons]] is Aikins's named representative in [[claim-aikins-1902-ch11-quotes-jevons-conversion-rules-verbatim-then-rejects-rule-following|Chapter XI's conversion material]] and [[claim-aikins-1902-ch16-footnote-quotes-jevons-eight-syllogism-rules-verbatim-then-rejects-them|Chapter XVI's syllogism-figure material]] — is the organizing project of the deductive half of the book, not an incidental byproduct of the fallacy chapter written six chapters later.

Together, the Preface and the two chapter-level engagements answer a question the vault had left open since 2026-09-18: Aikins's own syllogism-rule chapters do correct and contest Jevons's stated rules directly and in his own words, independent of, and prior to, the shared jingle-fallacy chapter the vault had already captured.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> A preface is where an author tells you what they think they're doing before the book has a chance to complicate it. What's notable is how plainly Aikins states the trade he's making — not "I disagree with the traditional rules" but "I have omitted [them] and put in their place... principles." That's a stronger, more structural claim than a chapter-by-chapter disagreement would be: the whole architecture of the deductive half of the book is built around the absence of the thing Jevons supplied. The jingle fallacy, six chapters later, is what happens when you follow the surface of a rule the principle behind it no longer licenses — which means the Preface was quietly setting up the fallacy chapter's whole argument from page iv.
