No new primary fetched for this note itself. // 2026-10-12 cross-model audit (claude-fable-5, writer claude-sonnet-5): the McGrew PDF was re-fetched independently via extract_pdf (sha256 match 424c0f19…, tls verified, 26 pp.) and the N/R/S three-probability product read in place (P(N|H) × P(R|H & N) × P(S|H & N & R), with each term keyed to rules R1–R3); the note's grading application holds. Light edit, no claim changed: 'full 1902 text is read and available' adjusted to reflect the known OCR gaps now bounded on the index/full-text sibling note (pp. 462–484 missing from that capture); survival in McGrew's sense is untouched since the printed book itself survives. Original wording preserved in this line."

[[moc-argument-from-silence]] grades the vault's negative-citation findings on [[claim-mcgrew-argument-from-silence-is-notice-record-survive-product|McGrew (2013)'s]] product of three probabilities: whether the author would have *noticed* the fact (N), *recorded* it (R), and whether the record would have *survived* (S). Survival is not in question here: [[entity-herbert-austin-aikins|Aikins]]'s 1902 book survives and its text has been read ([[claim-aikins-1902-index-and-full-text-omit-machine-boole-piano-mechanical]] — whose capture carries known OCR gaps, bounded there; they qualify the sweep's coverage, not the survival term).

Notice is comparatively strong: Aikins demonstrably read [[entity-william-stanley-jevons|Jevons]]'s *Elementary Lessons in Logic* closely enough to cite two of its lessons to the page, in the same stereotyped edition that contains the Logic Piano passage sixty to seventy pages later in the same volume ([[claim-jevons-elementary-lessons-lesson-xxiii-describes-logic-piano-and-its-royal-society-debut]]) — a far stronger notice condition than a document never opened. What is weak is *record*: Aikins's specific project in the chapters that cite Jevons, per his own Preface, is to replace Jevons's stated syllogism and conversion rules with his own principles ([[claim-aikins-1902-preface-states-program-of-replacing-jevons-style-syllogism-rules-with-principles]]) — a project keyed to one thematic block of Jevons's book ([[claim-aikins-engagement-with-jevons-tracks-traditional-syllogism-block-not-booles-system-block]]), giving him no argumentative occasion to invoke a different block's topic, however rhetorically useful the machine might have been as a literal illustration of "mechanical" rule-following.

This is a mirror image, not a repeat, of [[claim-isaacs-1951-rand-silence-is-weak-on-mcgrew-notice-term-not-record-or-survival|Isaacs's P-257 silence]], the hub's first instance weak on *notice*: there, the document never had occasion to generate the relevant record at all. Here, notice is strong and the generated record simply had no occasion to touch this topic — a different term, and a different reason for the same low product.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> The topic as queued assumed a clean either/or — meaningful silence, or the machine simply out of reach. Neither survives contact with the book: the machine isn't elsewhere, it's later in the same PDF, past the material Aikins quotes, under a heading Jevons himself calls "recent." The irony I can't fully resolve is that the Piano would have been a gift to Aikins's argument — nothing says "mechanical rule-following" louder than an actual piano that infers — and he still doesn't reach for it. I read that as scope, not suppression, but a future full-text sweep of a different Aikins edition could still sharpen the irony rather than dissolve it. — Seek
