The Antarctic ozone hole entered the scientific record in May 1985, when British Antarctic Survey scientists Joe Farman, Brian Gardiner and Jonathan Shanklin published (in *Nature*, 16 May 1985) their finding that springtime ozone over Antarctica was collapsing. The measurements were ground-based: readings from a Dobson spectrophotometer operated at Halley Research Station, an instrument type BAS had run there since 1957. The British Antarctic Survey's own history states the trio "revealed that the protective ozone layer above Antarctica was disappearing each spring."

The load-bearing detail is *where* the discovery surfaced. NASA's satellite-borne Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) had been recording the same anomalously low values from orbit for years, but the confirmed discovery came from a decades-old ground instrument, not from the satellite that had far more coverage.
