French cash-in-transit firm Axytrans devalued banknotes with ink rather than guarding them, and that 'eradicate temptation' logic underlies the ink-stained metaphor behind Zero Trust

Axytrans, a French cash-in-transit company founded by Philippe Regnier, is the traceable origin of the ink-staining logic later imported into information security as the seed metaphor for de-perimeterisation and Zero Trust (see claim-de-perimeterisation-coined-2001-royal-mail-ink-stained-cash-paper). Per Spencer & Pizio (2024), the reframe followed the death of a cash-transport driver: rather than spend more on guarding vans and personnel, Regnier asked "how can we eradicate temptation?" The answer was to destroy the value of what would be stolen — dyeing the banknotes with ink, using the VALTIS system deployed from 1990 — which let the company reduce other physical protections and run lighter, cheaper transport. The move is a category shift: instead of asset protection ("keep the attacker out"), security becomes asset design ("make what's inside worthless to take").
