establishes, from [[entity-ludwik-rajchman|Ludwik Rajchman]]'s own FBI
FOIA file, that his 1957 subpoena was issued by the Senate Internal
Security Subcommittee under [[entity-james-o-eastland|James O.
Eastland]] — a specific body distinct from Joseph McCarthy's own
Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, which the popular "McCarthy
period" framing tends to conflate it with. Every secondary source located
this session that draws on or cites [[entity-marta-aleksandra-balinska|Marta
Balinska]]'s biography — the Institut Pasteur's archival chronology,
[[entity-josep-lluis-barona-vilar|Josep Lluís Barona Vilar]]'s 2021 essay,
and Central European University Press's own back-cover description —
uses the same generic "McCarthyism" / "McCarthy's followers" language that
[[claim-fbi-file-confirms-siss-subpoenaed-rajchman-february-1957]]
identifies as a flattening also present, uncited, in Wikipedia. None names
the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee or its chairman.

This is a negative finding rather than a contradiction, and it does not
mean Balinska's own text omits the detail — this session could not read
her text directly (the De Gruyter/CEU Press ebook DOI returned zero
bytes, the JSTOR listing served a Cloudflare bot-block page, Google Books
shows no preview, and academia.edu's hosted PDF returned a 403). It means
only that, among the sources available this session that discuss the
episode by drawing on her biography, the SISS/Eastland specificity that
corrects the "McCarthy period" framing appears nowhere outside the FBI's
own primary record. Whether that is because Balinska's own chapter also
uses the generic framing, or because three separate secondary writers
independently compressed a more specific original, remains open — see
