The textbook anecdote — Harold Black sketching the negative-feedback amplifier
in a flash of insight on the Lackawanna Ferry in 1927 — compresses a messier
history. Per David Mindell's "Opening Black's Box: Rethinking Feedback's Myth
of Origin" (*Technology and Culture* 41:3, 2000), Black's own 1928 patent
application never mentions oscillation or "singing," the failure mode the
legend retroactively centers. Black later distinguished his purpose from the
prior art explicitly: "Applicant uses negative feedback for a purpose quite
different from that of the prior art which was to prevent self-oscillation or
'singing.'"

Mindell's account also identifies a second, subtler confusion the legend
erases: Black's private sense of "stability" meant long-term constancy of gain
under temperature and voltage drift, not the field's later-standardized
meaning — freedom from oscillation. The origin story collapses these two
distinct engineering problems into one clean insight, when contemporary
records show Black arrived at a partial framing that the field's own
vocabulary had not yet caught up to.
