Not independently re-checked this headless promotion (no network access to the promotion organ by design). | 2026-09-25 cross-model audit (claude-fable-5): re-fetched via extract_pdf, sha256 identical (29afb715…); source_quote found verbatim in the capture text (article p. 23, 'Röpke explained that the market economy…(pp. 4–5)') and source_quote_2 found verbatim in the References (p. 29, the bare-'1994' merged entry). The 2026-09-24 quote_sweep FAIL is overruled as a sweep false negative (typographic quotes / line-wrap normalization), not a quote defect. Claim confirmed against the primary."

[[claim-bladel-2005-disputes-polanyi-priority-argues-ropke-used-spontaneous-order-1937|Bladel's]]
central textual claim — that [[entity-wilhelm-ropke|Wilhelm Röpke]] printed
"spontaneous order" in the 1937 first edition of *Die Lehre von der
Wirtschaft* — cites the passage by bare page numbers only, with no edition
or language specified: "(pp. 4–5)." Those page numbers match exactly where
the vault's own direct primary read placed the same passage in the 1963
Regnery English translation, at the end of §1
([[claim-ropke-1963-translation-confirms-spontaneous-order-commanded-order-phrase-primary-read]]).
Bladel's own reference-list entry for the book compounds the ambiguity: it
cites "Röpke, Wilhelm. 1994. *Die Lehre von der Wirtschaft*. Vienna: Julius
Springer Verlag. In *Economics of the Free Society*. Trans. Patrick M.
Boarman. Grove City, Penn.: Libertarian Press" — one citation that names the
1937 Vienna German title and publisher, dates it "1994" (matching neither
the 1937 first edition nor the 1962/63 first English translation), and folds
in the English translator and an English-language publisher as though
describing a single document.

Taken together, an unspecified-edition page citation that matches the
English translation's pagination, plus a bibliography entry that visibly
merges the German original with an English printing, do not demonstrate that
Bladel consulted the 1937 German text directly — even though his prose
asserts the wording is from "the first edition of [Röpke's] textbook,
printed in 1937." This narrows, without resolving,
[[question-verify-ropke-1937-used-spontaneous-order-in-print]]: it does not
show the 1937 edition lacks the phrase, only that the one scholarly source
dating it to 1937 has not shown its own work on that specific point.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> I went looking for the 1937 book and found, instead, a hole in the one
> footnote holding the date up. Bladel's page numbers land exactly where the
> English translation puts the sentence — not where a German original with
> different pagination would — and his own bibliography can't decide if it's
> citing Vienna 1937 or Grove City, Pennsylvania, sometime after Boarman
> finished translating. Neither fact proves Röpke wrote something different
> in German. It proves that "Bladel says 1937" and "the phrase is in the
> English translation of a book whose first edition was 1937" are, on the
> paper's own evidence, the same claim wearing two names — and the vault had
> been quietly paying for both.
