The conventional Braille origin story compresses two events into a single scene:
a soldier or inventor demonstrates raised-dot night writing to blind students,
and the young Louis Braille improves it on the spot into the modern cell.
[[entity-philippa-campsie|Philippa Campsie]]'s account, drawn from Barbier's papers and correspondence,
separates them. Braille had already published his own six-dot system in 1829 —
the compression of Barbier's larger 2×6 (twelve-dot) phonetic grid down to the
2×3 cell still used today. Braille and Barbier did not actually meet in person
until 1833, four years *after* that publication.

The revised chronology undercuts the "young prodigy improves on a visiting
demonstration" narrative: Braille's decisive innovation preceded any personal
contact with Barbier. Campsie further describes their later correspondence as
"invariably friendly," which contradicts a separate legend — traced to school
director [[entity-alexandre-rene-pignier|Alexandre-René Pignier]] — of a personal rivalry between the two men.
