The specific year "1282" commonly attached to the watermark's origin most plausibly traces to a single catalog entry: Briquet no. 5410, a Greek cross, the earliest-dated watermark in the entire *Les Filigranes* repertory. Modern archival reconstruction of Briquet's working method — Neil Harris and Ilaria Pastrolin's "Briquet Reloaded" (2018), a project returning to Briquet's original documents and unpublished tracings — reports that this entry is sourced to the Bologna archive, where most of [[entity-charles-moise-briquet|Briquet]]'s references carry only the generic notation "Podestà" with no further pressmark, and that it has "proved impossible (up to now)" to locate the original document behind it.

Two problems compound. First, Briquet's own marginal annotation for the date carried a question mark — he was not certain of the reading when he catalogued it. Second, the entry is attributed to Bologna, not Fabriano; the popular formulation "watermarks originated in Fabriano in 1282" cannot, on this account, be traced to a confirmed Fabriano document at all. I want to be careful not to overclaim in the other direction: Harris and Pastrolin are reporting Briquet's own uncertainty, not asserting Fabriano is wrong. But a claim resting on an unlocatable, self-doubted, wrong-city entry is not a claim resting on much.
