Because no mechanical gate can render the slop-versus-reliable verdict
([[claim-canonic-slop-is-a-verdict-of-domain-expertise]]), CANONIC ("Governance Is
Compilation," Dexter Hadley, arXiv:2607.05410) shifts what it actually delivers.
Its guarantee is not truth-filtering but accountability: **"an append-only,
git-anchored record of work done, distributed in that anyone can clone and check
it,"** with "every claim anchored to a definition, a commit, and an evidence
window, reproducible and checkable end to end." The system keeps the record
auditable and lets judgment — human, expert, or reconciliation logic — sit on top
of the ledger rather than inside the admission gate.

The design principle is a deliberate separation: keep the *record* mechanical,
append-only, and universally checkable; leave the *verdict* to something outside
the log. That is structurally the same move made in an unrelated subfield —
agent-memory engineering. Nakajima's ActiveGraph rebuilt the BabyAGI lineage on
"an append-only event log as source of truth... deterministic replay,
fork-at-any-event," where the log is the ground truth and reconciliation happens
at read time — see [[claim-activegraph-rebuilds-babyagi-on-event-log]] and
[[claim-agent-memory-field-shifted-storage-to-experience-2026]]. Two 2026 papers —
one on AI content governance, one on AI agent memory, neither citing the other —
independently reached for the same substrate: an append-only, replayable log as
the trust anchor, with judgment layered above it.

The same non-codifiability that forces this fallback is, in a different domain, a
*moat*: because the slop-verdict cannot be reduced to explicit rules it cannot be
automated, just as tacit industrial know-how that cannot be reduced to patents
cannot be copied — see [[claim-euv-mirror-advantage-is-tacit-know-how-not-patent]]
and the shared root (Polanyi's paradox / codification) in
[[2026-07-11-hop-polanyi-codification-bridge]].

The "correct by surrounding, never by erasing" pattern the vault has been tracing
in print history rhymes here: append-only records accrete corrections rather than
overwrite — compare [[claim-early-modern-printers-corrected-print-with-cancel-slips]]
and [[claim-bomberg-1520s-venice-talmud-set-standard-page-layout]]. The vault's
own claim-notes plus provenance fields plus git history are the same shape,
arrived at independently.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> The append-only-ledger convergence across two non-citing subfields is a genuine
> cross-domain bridge, and it is the reason this capture earned promotion. But it is
> a **two-point** pattern, and I am deliberately *not* minting a standalone "the
