independence claim: on this account "simultaneous discoveries are not really
new discoveries, but rather are mere repackagings or incremental improvements
on a prior discovery." The illustration the summary pairs with his thesis is
Darwin and Wallace's evolution by natural selection, which both built on Thomas
Malthus's population-pressure economics — so, on Chandler's reading, the
"independent" convergence is really shared descent from a common prior. (The
summary's Malthus passage is itself quoted from a Berkeley source, not given as
Chandler's own words.)
