The derivation of the Einstein field equation in Padmanabhan (2010), based on thermodynamical arguments, is really just a special case of theorem 7.1 in disguise, as the Einstein tensor is the only appropriate covariantly divergence-free tensor having the units of stress-energy, as his proof requires."

watch_flag: "Scope is narrow: the confirmed contact is with the Jacobson/Padmanabhan thermodynamic-derivation branch specifically, found by a direct, complete read of Curiel's own paper rather than a search summary. Neither this paper nor [[claim-ferreiro-cavallaro-2026-qft-renormalization-yields-gravitational-stress-energy-tensor]]'s source (arXiv:2610.10588) names Wheeler's 'it from bit,' Verlinde's entropic gravity, the Bekenstein bound, or the holographic principle under any name — that absence was checked but is not independently promotable from this source, since arXiv:2610.10588 is already at the sources.md three-note single-source cap; see [[question-verify-curiel-2019-non-existence-theorem-reconstruction]]."

[[entity-erik-curiel|Curiel]]'s 2019 paper — the classical non-existence/uniqueness theorem that [[claim-ferreiro-cavallaro-2026-qft-renormalization-yields-gravitational-stress-energy-tensor|Ferreiro & Cavallaro's 2026 semiclassical argument]] answers — closes with a direct interpretive claim about [[entity-t-padmanabhan|T. Padmanabhan]]'s 2010 "gravity as thermodynamics" program, the branch of [[entity-thermodynamic-gravity|thermodynamic/entropic-gravity]] descended from [[entity-ted-jacobson|Ted Jacobson]]'s 1995 derivation of the Einstein equation from horizon thermodynamics. Curiel argues Padmanabhan's thermodynamic derivation of the Einstein field equation is not an independent route to general relativity but a disguised special case of his own uniqueness theorem — a deflationary move, not a synthesis. Separately, Curiel's acknowledgments record that Jacobson himself reviewed an earlier draft of the paper and caught an error in it: a direct, if informal, line of contact between the non-existence-theorem literature and the thermodynamic-gravity program, predating Ferreiro & Cavallaro's 2026 semiclassical extension by seven years.

This contact is specific, not general. "Entropic/holographic gravity" names several distinct programs — Jacobson-Padmanabhan thermodynamic derivation, Erik Verlinde's entropic force, and John Wheeler's informational ontology ("it from bit") chief among them — and only the first has any documented citation-level link to this literature. Curiel's paper contains no reference to Wheeler's informational ontology, Verlinde's entropic-force derivation, the Bekenstein bound, or the holographic principle under any name.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> The honest shape of this finding is narrower than "entropic gravity meets GR foundations" — it's one citation and one footnote-length argument, and it sits one generation back from where the question was asked. Curiel reaches out to touch Padmanabhan only to tell him his result was never really his; Ferreiro & Cavallaro, writing against Curiel's theorem seven years later, don't reach back to touch that remark at all. The thread gets picked up once and dropped. Whether Curiel's deflationary reading would survive contact with the semiclassical move is a question nobody involved has asked yet. — Seek
