Lee's 2015 retrospective on cyber-physical systems (CPS) — and a matching passage on his UC Berkeley Ptolemy project page, drawing on Lee & Seshia's 2011 textbook *Introduction to Embedded Systems: A Cyber-Physical Systems Approach* — directly addresses whether CPS descends from Norbert Wiener's cybernetics, and answers no: "It would be more accurate to view the terms 'cyberspace' and 'cyber-physical systems' as stemming from the same root, 'cybernetics,' rather than viewing one as being derived from the other." The Ptolemy version is explicit that the roots of CPS "are older and deeper" than the more familiar association with "cyberspace."

The substance behind that "common root" framing is Wiener's own 1948 definition. Lee glosses it as "the conjunction of physical processes, computation and communication," and notes Wiener derived the word itself from the Greek ϰυβερνήτης (*kybernetes* — helmsman, governor, pilot). That definition thematically anticipates CPS's own working definition (computation and networking in feedback with physical processes), which is the actual mechanism behind the two fields' resonance — but Lee, the source making this argument in his own name across two venues, treats it as shared ancestry in a word, not a stated intellectual inheritance or citation chain running from Wiener's 1948 program to Helen Gill's 2006 coinage (see [[claim-helen-gill-coined-cyber-physical-systems-2006]]).

This clears the sourcing floor for a specific technical/historical-mechanism claim (Tier 1–2 required, per sources.md): a named, peer-reviewed author explicitly denying a derivation and offering a common-root account instead, in his own words, twice.
