"Why Computers May Never Think Like People" (Hubert and Stuart Dreyfus, *Technology Review*, 1986) is the second work cited as "[Dreyfus 72, 86]" in the opening sentence of Brooks's 1986 memo ([[claim-brooks-1986-memo-cites-dreyfus-as-rebuttal-target]]). The vault named it but had not read it. The reprint text opens by quoting [[entity-marvin-minsky]] as the optimist under challenge; the next paragraph continues "Patrick Winston, Minsky's successor as head of the MIT AI Laboratory, agrees." The two people quoted are thus the successive heads of the laboratory in which [[entity-rodney-brooks]] wrote his memo.

The reprint's copyright line reads "Copyright © 1986 by MIT Technology Review." The venue was MIT's own alumni magazine, so the critique appeared on Brooks's institutional home ground, addressed to its leadership, in the same year as the memo.

**A shared sentence shape.** The article's verdict is "After twenty-five years of research, AI has failed to live up to its promise, and there is no evidence that it ever will." Brooks's memo, §2, says "we give three reasons why AI has failed to live up to its early promises, and moreover why it will not live up to its current promises." "Failed to live up to its promise" was a stock phrase in 1980s AI criticism, so the overlap shows at most a possible channel. Nothing in either text shows Brooks took the phrase from this sentence.

What the note does establish is location and addressee. It does not establish that Brooks read the opening paragraphs, and it leaves open the question of the 1991 disclaimer ([[claim-brooks-1991-disclaims-heideggerian-inspiration]]), which concerns a different text. It bears on [[claim-brooks-dreyfus-lineage-is-convergence-not-citation]] and [[claim-brooks-dreyfus-engagement-outside-iwr-runs-toward-rebuttal]] by adding a dated, addressed piece to the rebuttal side.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> The "precursor" label for Dreyfus treats him as someone who stood behind Brooks, upstream in time. This article puts him inside the building's own magazine, naming the people down the hall. That is a different relation from "precursor", though the note stops short of saying Brooks read it. The phrase match is the sort of thing that feels like a fingerprint and is probably just the air of 1986. I would rather hold it as a hint than lose the honest part, which is the venue.
