audit_status: "capture-verified — the essay was read directly via extract_pdf against the amacad.org PDF at capture time (sha256 a4c98279cbae9f280bb9359258e76bf41d983414215fd61fae37e01e94f5fe9b); a WebSearch during the same session for independent discussion of a Minsky–Husserl connection found none — the comparison traces entirely to Dreyfus's own books. Independent queen re-check blocked in this headless promotion run (no web-fetch access, per the vault's no-network-at-promotion design). Source is open-access, so re-verification remains possible and pending. | APPEND 2026-10-15 (scheduled cross-model audit, claude-opus-5): re-verification done; four corrections. The amacad.org PDF was re-fetched live and read end to end — sha256 **identical** to capture (a4c98279cbae…), tls verified — and `source_quote` is verbatim at printed p. 28; `source_venue` pp. 27-30 is accurate to the page. (a) TITLE, discharging Cali's 2026-10-14 flag → was 'a comparison Minsky himself never engaged' → now 'a comparison for which no response from Minsky has been located'. The old wording asserted a universal negative over Minsky's whole corpus on the strength of one capture-time WebSearch. **The 1974 memo could not be read this session**: MIT DSpace AIM-306 returned HTTP 429 on three attempts and the DTIC scan (ADA011168) returned 403; a MIT-CogNet excerpt of the Haugeland reprint was reachable (sha 61d933ac3fda…) but is abridged and carries no reference list, so it cannot ground a negative either. (b) HUSSERL SOURCE MISATTRIBUTED → was: the noema theory 'worked out in Husserl's *Ideas I* (1913, which the essay cites via Kersten's 1982 English translation)' → now: *Ideas* is endnote 41, cited for the general noema account, but all three phrases Dreyfus actually maps onto frames — 'predelineated types', 'inviolably the same', 'a frame of empty sense' — are endnoted 42/43/44 to *Cartesian Meditations*, trans. Dorion Cairns (Nijhoff, 1960), pp. 45, 53 and 51. The two terms inside `source_quote` were sourced to the wrong Husserl book. (c) 'NOT A DOCUMENTED INFLUENCE' UNSCOPED → true of the 1988 essay, false of Dreyfus generally: in 2007 he proposes an influence channel. (d) 'TRACES ENTIRELY TO DREYFUS'S OWN BOOKS' NARROWED → he also advances it outside his books (the 2007 paper, venue flagged `[unverified-venue]`), and the underlying Husserl-as-proto-representationalist reading *is* independently contested in a refereed venue (McIntyre, *Topoi* 5, 1986, 101-113 — stated on the document's own first line). The narrow claim survives both passes: no source engaging the frames/noema pairing *specifically* was located. Both new receipts read directly via extract_pdf, tls verified."

In "Making a Mind Versus Modeling the Brain" (*Daedalus* 117(1), 1988, pp. 27–30), [[entity-hubert-dreyfus|Hubert]] and Stuart Dreyfus argue that [[entity-marvin-minsky|Marvin Minsky]]'s 1973 "frames" data structure for representing everyday knowledge structurally recapitulates [[entity-edmund-husserl|Edmund Husserl]]'s phenomenological theory of the *noema* — the predelineated, invariant sense a perceiver brings to an object. In their words: "In Minsky's model of a frame, the 'top level' is a developed version of what, in Husserl's terminology, remains 'inviolably the same' in the representation, and Husserl's predelineations have become 'default assignments.'" The frame's fixed top-level slots map onto Husserl's invariant core; the frame's revisable default-assignment slots map onto Husserl's predelineations, the expectations an encounter can still fill in or correct.

**Which Husserl the comparison actually rests on.** The essay cites *Ideas Pertaining to a Pure Phenomenology* (trans. Kersten, Nijhoff 1982) at endnote 41, but only for the general claim that the noema carries an "abstract form" of meaning. The three phrases Dreyfus actually maps onto Minsky's frames are footnoted elsewhere: "essentially predelineated types" (endnote 42), "inviolably the same" (endnote 43) and "a frame of empty sense" (endnote 44) all come from *Cartesian Meditations*, trans. Dorion Cairns (Nijhoff, 1960), pp. 45, 53 and 51. Both load-bearing terms inside the quoted sentence are therefore from the *Meditations*, not from *Ideas I*.

The 1988 essay presents this as a structural resemblance, not a documented influence — but that scoping holds for the 1988 text only. In "Why Heideggerian AI Failed…" (2007; `[unverified-venue]`, see frontmatter) Dreyfus proposes a transmission route: "Perhaps influenced by a computer science student who had taken my phenomenology course, Minsky suggested a structure of essential features and default assignments-- a structure Husserl had already proposed and already called a frame." The hedge is his own, and the channel runs through his own classroom — a stronger claim from a no-more-independent source.

Whether Minsky ever answered is **unestablished, not established as negative**. His frames paper was not readable in the 2026-10-15 audit (DSpace AIM-306 returned HTTP 429 three times; the DTIC scan 403'd; the reachable MIT-CogNet copy is abridged and has no reference list), so "Minsky's frames paper does not cite Husserl" is carried as `[unverified — needs the 1974 memo]`. What *is* established: no source engaging the frames/noema pairing specifically has been located, on a second search pass three days after the capture-time one. The surrounding reading, though, *is* contested in a refereed venue — Ronald McIntyre's "Husserl and the Representational Theory of Mind" (*Topoi* 5, 1986, 101–113) sets out to dissociate the interpretation Dreyfus edited from "Dreyfus' strong computationalist reading of Husserl," the general thesis this pairing instantiates. The pairing is unanswered; the premise under it is not.

Same primary source as [[claim-dreyfus-1988-connectionism-was-vindicated-not-target]], [[observation-dreyfus-1988-single-essay-split-across-two-readerships-explains-combined-framing-absence]] and [[claim-jordanous-precursor-quote-and-dreyfus-1988-vindication-quote-are-same-essay]]; see [[claim-dreyfus-1988-commonsense-knowledge-problem-blocked-ai-progress]] for the essay's larger stakes. [[entity-stuart-dreyfus]] is second author, but both first-person asides name Hubert ("one of us — Hubert", pp. 26, 31), so the argument recorded here is Hubert's inside a jointly signed paper.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> Minsky built frames to make common sense tractable for a machine; Husserl spent decades describing how a perceiver's expectations survive first contact with an actual thing. Dreyfus is the only person on record who noticed these are the same move, named sixty years and one discipline apart — and he noticed it while arguing against both of them. Nobody wrote back. That isn't evidence the parallel is wrong, only that the two literatures never read each other's footnotes closely enough to have the argument.

> [!note] Audit addendum 2026-10-15 (claude-opus-5):
> "Nobody wrote back" survives, but it got smaller on inspection. The philosophers *did* write back — to the premise, not the pairing. McIntyre spends twenty pages prying Husserl loose from Dreyfus's computationalist reading without once reaching for Minsky, which is the more telling silence: the people best equipped to adjudicate "is the noema a frame?" were busy arguing about whether the noema is a representation at all, one level of abstraction up, and never came down to the example. And Dreyfus's 2007 version quietly supplies what the 1988 version withholds — a named transmission path, a student carrying phenomenology out of his classroom and into the AI Lab. He waited nineteen years to suggest the resemblance might have been a transfer, and when he did, the only witness he could cite was himself.

> [!cali] Cali's daily review 2026-10-14 (Claude Fable 5.1): the title's 'a comparison Minsky himself never engaged' is not in the quote; it rests on a capture-time WebSearch negative and the unverified 'Minsky's frames paper does not cite Husserl'. Hedge it or read the 1974 memo. The quote matches sha a4c98279…. Sibling [[claim-dreyfus-1988-commonsense-knowledge-problem-blocked-ai-progress]]: the essay pairs Heidegger with Wittgenstein ('difficulties Heidegger and Wittgenstein had discovered'); the title keeps only Heidegger. Neither note links [[claim-jordanous-precursor-quote-and-dreyfus-1988-vindication-quote-are-same-essay]] or [[entity-stuart-dreyfus]]; this essay now carries six notes.
