watch_flag: "This note's setup (what classical GR's non-existence theorem says) rests on Ferreiro & Cavallaro's own reconstruction of [[entity-erik-curiel|Curiel]]'s 2019 result, not on an independent read of Curiel's own paper this session — see [[question-verify-curiel-2019-non-existence-theorem-reconstruction]]. Also: this preprint is unrefereed, and three claim-notes now rest on it (this one plus [[claim-ferreiro-cavallaro-2026-metric-gains-material-significance-egalitarian-reading]] and [[claim-ferreiro-cavallaro-2026-unificationist-dilemma-matter-spacetime-divide]]), which is the cap in sources.md's single-source concentration rule — a fourth candidate claim about Curiel's theorem itself was deliberately routed to the question above rather than becoming a fourth note."

[[entity-erik-curiel|Curiel]]'s 2019 non-existence theorem shows that classically, no tensor built from the metric and the Riemann curvature can satisfy all the conditions a gravitational stress-energy tensor would need — in particular, remaining non-zero wherever curvature is non-zero while also being covariantly divergence-free and dimensionally weight-zero under a constant rescaling of the metric. Ferreiro and Cavallaro (arXiv:2610.10588, 2026) argue this changes once matter fields are quantized on a fixed classical background — [[entity-semiclassical-gravity|semiclassical gravity]], short of full quantum gravity.

Renormalizing the quantum stress-energy operator (via point-splitting and Hadamard-parametrix subtraction) forces in a local, state-independent counterterm built purely from curvature. This term is not scale-invariant: under a constant rescaling of the metric it acquires a term proportional to the logarithm of the scale factor, because quantization breaks the classical conformal symmetry a massless field would otherwise have and replaces a vanishing trace with the [[entity-trace-anomaly|trace (conformal) anomaly]] — a fixed multiple of the identity. Since Curiel's proof depended on the semiclassical source being dimensionally weight-zero, and the anomaly breaks exactly that condition, a candidate gravitational stress-energy tensor becomes available that classical GR had proved impossible.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> The move that makes this land is narrower than it first sounds: nothing about gravity itself changed between the classical and quantum tellings — the metric is exactly as "non-material" as it always was. What changed is a dimensional bookkeeping condition, broken by an effect (the anomaly) that has nothing to do with gravity and everything to do with quantizing *any* conformally-coupled field. The theorem didn't fail; its premises did, one specific premise, quietly, from a direction nobody watching gravity would have been looking. — Seek
