The Presumptuous-Philosopher-from-FNC reading (§4.1), the Appendix B 1/N-squared breakdown under correlated circumstances, and the \"direct inspiration\" acknowledgement all CONFIRMED. ONE MATERIAL CORRECTION. The note credited the framework's proposal to Brewer, Lewis & Goodman: superseded wording was \"Brewer, Lewis & Goodman (2026) propose 'Full Indexical Conditioning' (FIC) ... as a repair to Radford Neal's 2006 'Full Non-Indexical Conditioning' (FNC)\" and \"FIC keeps that premise but adds a selection term.\" Both the NAME and the augmentation are Neal's own. Brewer et al. say so in their own §2.3 (now source_quote_2), and the claim no longer rests on their account alone: Neal's 2006 preprint was fetched independently (extract_pdf, sha256 9abdd90e981c..., tls verified, 53 pp.) and coins the term on its p. 9 (now source_quote_4), in the course of REJECTING it — Neal's objection is that FIC requires mystical \"essences\". So the vault's earlier reading had the paternity backwards: Brewer et al. revive and formalize the alternative FNC's own author named and discarded. What is genuinely theirs is the (AE, AS) factorization, the reference-class treatment, and the astrobiological applications. Also corrected: source_venue claimed submission to MNRAS, which neither the paper nor the arXiv listing states (MNRAS appears only via the LaTeX style file and running heads), and the cross-list line omitted physics.data-an and stat.AP. CONCENTRATION CAP: arXiv:2610.22896 is an unrefereed preprint carrying three claim-notes in this vault (this one, claim-reference-class-problem-dissolves-..., claim-fic-abiogenesis-timing-...), which is exactly the sources.md three-note cap. Adding Neal's 2006 preprint as a second root does NOT discharge the cap: Neal corroborates only who named FIC, not any of the 2026 paper's own results. The next finding goes to the existing question-corroborate-brewer-lewis-goodman-2026-fic-preprint rather than becoming a fourth note."

Brewer, Lewis & Goodman (2026) develop and apply "Full Indexical Conditioning" (FIC), a Bayesian framework for handling anthropic selection effects, against [[entity-radford-neal|Radford Neal]]'s 2006 "Full Non-Indexical Conditioning" (FNC) — a preprint the authors' own acknowledgements name as "the direct inspiration" for the paper, "even though we disagreed with it in the end." FNC instructs a reasoner to condition on the "global existence" of their evidence or memories — that such evidence exists *somewhere* in the universe — without any further indexical claim about which observer holds it. FIC keeps that premise but adds a selection term: that the reasoner in question is, in fact, the one who has that evidence. In the 2026 authors' words: "FIC conditions on all evidence available to the reasoner while considering that this evidence could have been otherwise."

The name and the augmentation are Neal's own, not the 2026 paper's. Brewer, Lewis & Goodman say so themselves — "In his paper, Neal (2006) briefly mentions a possible alternative to FNC which he termed Full Indexical Conditioning (FIC)" — and Neal's preprint, read directly, coins the term on its p. 9 in the act of discarding it: "SSA can perhaps be seen as arising from what might be called 'Full Indexical Conditioning', in which we assume that in addition to their memories, everyone also has some unique 'essence', and everyone in some sense knows what their own essence is." Neal's objection is to those essences ("It seems preferable to me to not introduce such mystical 'essences' unless ignoring them can be shown to produce implausible results"). What the 2026 paper contributes is not the idea's name but its machinery: the factorization of the selection step as P(AE, AS) = P(AE)P(AS | AE), the treatment of reference classes under it, and the astrobiological applications.

The authors present the addition as correcting a failure mode of FNC used alone — a tendency toward inappropriately presumptuous conclusions, structurally resembling [[entity-nick-bostrom|Bostrom]]'s "Presumptuous Philosopher" problem, when FNC is applied to astrobiological questions. An appendix extends FIC to two reasoners pooling evidence and flags that its simple joint-selection term (proportional to 1/N²) breaks down once the reasoners' circumstances are correlated rather than independent — a caveat the paper does not work through for its own astrobiological applications.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> A framework built explicitly to repair its own stated inspiration is a particular kind of homage — keep the premise, reject the conclusion, and put the debt in the acknowledgements rather than make a referee dig it out. The sharper thing, which the vault had backwards until this was checked against Neal's own paper: the alternative they revive is the one Neal himself named and then threw away, for a reason (mystical essences) their machinery is designed to make unnecessary. That is not a rival proposing a repair from outside. That is someone reaching into a twenty-year-old paper's discard pile. Whether FIC survives its own first real objection isn't knowable from one preprint — and Neal's FNC is itself a single unrefereed 2006 preprint, so "the established view" is the wrong frame for either side here.
