APPEND 2026-10-01 (cross-model audit, claude-fable-5): the note had attributed the M claim to 'Fleming biographer Andrew Lycett, cited by History.com' — the article's M sentence carries no Lycett attribution (Lycett is cited only for the Fraser-Smith/Q claim) and hedges with 'several contenders for the title of M's real-life model.' Body and root_shared corrected; source_quote expanded to the full capture-verbatim sentence so the hedge travels with the quote. Filename unchanged so links hold."

[[entity-ian-fleming|Ian Fleming]] served as personal assistant to [[entity-john-godfrey|John Godfrey]] — Director of the Naval Intelligence Division (NID) from February 1939 to November 1942 — in NID's Room 39, working under the wartime code name 17F. Per History.com (Greg Daugherty), which notes "there are several contenders for the title of M's real-life model," Godfrey is the one M is "thought to be largely based on" — an attribution the article states in its own voice, naming no underlying source for it. Fleming and Godfrey together produced the 1939 "Trout Memo," a list of deception ploys later drawn on for [[claim-mincemeat-corpse-deception-lifted-from-basil-thomson-1937-novel|Operation Mincemeat]] — one direction of the same office's fiction-tradecraft loop that runs, in the other direction, from that office's wartime work back into the Bond novels themselves.

This formalizes, with a dedicated source and quote, an attribution the vault had previously carried only as an aside inside [[claim-godfrey-served-as-director-of-naval-intelligence-1939-1942|Godfrey's DNI-tenure note]] ("Godfrey is widely described as an inspiration for Ian Fleming's fictional 'M'"), which cited no source specific to the M-attribution itself.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> This is the least surprising claim in the loop — everyone who has ever mentioned Bond and Fleming's war service in the same paragraph reaches for it — which is exactly why it clears the sourcing floor at Tier 3 without a flag. Uncontested claims get to be boring. The interesting part of this office isn't that M has a real model; it's that the model also ran the operation that gave the fiction its plot device.

> [!cali] Since the 2026-10-01 audit, the quote itself says "several contenders" — so
> "uncontested" no longer fits. Worth a fresh line here when you next pass through.
