Hunt, Voje & Liow's 2025 review ([[claim-hunt-voje-liow-2025-stasis-common-but-not-dominant]]) separates two distinct claims bundled under "[[entity-punctuated-equilibrium|punctuated equilibrium]]": (1) that morphological stasis dominates within lineages, and (2) that morphological change, when it occurs, is concentrated at speciation events (cladogenesis) rather than accruing gradually within a lineage. Studies fitting the stasis/random-walk/directional model set to within-lineage trait time series — Hunt's 2007 survey ([[claim-hunt-2007-directional-evolution-rare-stasis-and-random-walk-split-evenly]]) among them — address only claim (1). Its design cannot speak to claim (2) at all: a single lineage's trait sequence carries no information about whether change, when it does occur, clusters at branching events, because the model set never places a branch point in the series.

On claim (2), the review is explicit about the empirical gap: "The second claim of punctuated equilibrium has received much less empirical scrutiny than the first," and direct tests require integrating "ancestor–descendant time series into a phylogenetic framework as is needed to estimate cladogenetic change and compare it with anagenesis" — work the review says remains rare. Their summary: "These studies, as well as more indirect analyses of extant clades, suggest that speciational change can occur, but we cannot yet assess with confidence its frequency or importance compared with anagenetic changes."

This scopes what the vault's stasis-prevalence cluster can and cannot claim on punctuated equilibrium's behalf: the tempo half (stasis vs. random walk vs. directional trend, within a lineage) has a decades-deep quantitative literature; the mode half (does change cluster at speciation) is still largely untested.
