NASA Technical Memorandum X-58010, "Food Consumption on the Gemini IV, V,
and VII Missions" (Lachance, Nanz, and Klicka; NASA Manned Spacecraft Center
with the U.S. Army Natick Laboratories' Food Division, October 1967), reads
mostly as an in-flight logistics and calorie-accounting document. Yet it
records that calcium intake was fortified specifically "as related to the
bone demineralization (M-6) and calcium balance (M-7) experiments" flown on
these missions — a medical concern about skeletal loss in microgravity
already operational by 1966, tucked inside what otherwise looks like a
nutrition ledger.

The report's mundane findings sharpen the point: Gemini V crewmembers ate so
little they each lost 3–4 kg (partly attributed to "anorexia"), while on
Gemini IV most weight loss was water rather than tissue. Distinguishing water
loss from genuine tissue and bone loss is exactly why the M-6/M-7 calcium and
bone experiments mattered — the crude weight data could not answer whether
astronauts were demineralizing.

This is the flight-side origin of a research problem that a ground-based
program was built to answer: how to study, and eventually counteract,
microgravity bone loss without keeping subjects in orbit. That program was

and its central method became

The underlying M-6/M-7 flight experiment (Whedon et al., Gemini Midprogram
