The goals-as-reference-points account (Heath, Larrick & Wu, "Goals as Reference Points," *Cognitive Psychology*, 1999) holds that a goal functions as a reference point in the sense of prospect theory: outcomes below the goal register as losses and outcomes above it as gains. As restated in the 2023 four-sport replication, "research on goals as reference points shows that people who are slightly below their goal work harder than those who have reached or exceeded it, in a manner consistent with loss aversion." Effort is highest just below the reference point, where the marginal value of closing the gap is steepest.

This is the load-bearing *mechanism* under a family of otherwise separate findings. The individual [[claim-fresh-start-effect-requires-subjective-new-beginning-framing|Fresh Start Effect]], Gersick's group-level [[claim-gersick-1991-punctuated-equilibrium-deep-structure|midpoint transition]], and the competitive [[claim-berger-pope-nba-halftime-deficit-raises-win-probability|halftime-deficit effect]] can each be read as one costume over the same engine: a temporal landmark supplies a reference point, and being below it triggers loss-aversion-driven effort. Naming the shared engine is what lets the family be evaluated as a unit rather than three coincidences.

That unit is only as sturdy as its engine.
