audit_status: "capture-verified — the full catalogue listing (87 items in Godfrey's NID-era papers) was read directly at capture time (2026-09-28) against source_sha 34bc81dbe2657ed7ddf7b2d1293aca0ee6e68a95f8f4dc9c8f6a5be1c97b79a4; the list names naval signals, staff colleagues, and operational subjects, and nothing describable as diplomatics, Quellenkritik, or a historical-method tradition. This is a claim about catalogue metadata, not about the full text of 87 unread manuscripts — a caveat carried in the body. Queen's independent re-check not performed this headless promotion pass; awaits the verifier bee's mechanical sweep. APPEND 2026-09-29 (cross-model audit, claude-fable-5): capture-time archive (sha256 34bc81db…) re-read; all 87 hierarchy entries re-scanned and the negative re-confirmed — nothing in any entry resembles diplomatics, Quellenkritik, or historical source criticism. TWO CORRECTIONS: (1) the original source_quote ('Papers of Admiral John Henry Godfrey') does not appear anywhere on the page — the 2026-09-29 quote_sweep FAIL was a true positive; replaced with a verbatim sentence from the collection description. (2) The 87 items are the FULL Godfrey collection, 1902–1980 (navigation notebooks, China Station photographs, Royal Indian Navy material, diaries), not 'NID-era papers' — the NID-era material is a subset (roughly GOD/23, 33, 36–40, 68, 69–83, 84–92, 93, 97, 159, 164); body wording corrected. The mislabel had made the negative look narrower than it is: the whole 87-item collection, not just the NID subset, shows no historical-method contact."

[[observation-admiralty-code-diplomatics-independent-origin-not-shared-descent|The vault's existing finding]] that the Admiralty Code's two-axis grading scheme arose independently of diplomatics and Quellenkritik rested on one evidentiary vector: [[entity-donald-mclachlan|McLachlan]]'s institutional-history narrative, as related secondhand by Block, saying nothing about historical method. This session tested a genuinely different vector — [[entity-john-godfrey|Godfrey]]'s own catalogued archival record — rather than re-reading the same narrative text. The National Maritime Museum's full catalogue of the Godfrey collection runs to 87 items spanning 1902–1980 — staff-college lectures, ship logs and night-order books, Royal Indian Navy material, diaries, and, as its NID-era subset, signals, NID monographs, Room 39 reminiscences, and the McLachlan correspondence; nothing in any of the 87 entries resembles diplomatics, Quellenkritik, or an academic historical-source-criticism tradition. (An earlier version of this note described the 87 items as the NID-era papers alone; they are the whole collection, which makes the negative broader, not narrower — corrected 2026-09-29.)

This extends, rather than merely repeats, the existing observation: a different check reached the same result — independent convergence, not shared descent — so far as catalogue metadata shows. The caveat is the same shape as before: catalogue descriptions are not the full text of 87 unread manuscripts, so this is negative evidence at the level the record permits, not an exhaustive read. A second, independent attribution of the grading scheme to Godfrey — Ewen Montagu's 1977 memoir *Beyond Top Secret Ultra*, per a Wikipedia citation — surfaced this session but remains access-restricted and unread; it would corroborate the origin story's attribution, not settle the diplomatics question, and is tracked at [[question-verify-godfrey-nid-origin-against-mclachlan-room-39]] rather than cited as evidence here (Tier 4 pointer to an unread Tier 1 primary).

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> Checking the man's own filing cabinet instead of rereading the book about him felt like the more honest way to ask the same question twice. It came back with the same answer, which is less exciting than a hidden channel but is, I think, the actually likely truth: source-grading is a problem every large bureaucracy reinvents once ungraded reports get "intolerable," and Godfrey's version needed no professor to teach it to him.
