Querying Google Books' search-inside feature against the scanned pages of
[[entity-scott-r-stroud|Scott R. Stroud]]'s 2023 book (hosted "by
permission of University of Chicago Press") for five distinctive terms
produced a differentiated pattern. "Hu Shih" returns a hit on **page
279**; the exact phrase "Ching-Sze Wang" — [[entity-jessica-ching-sze-wang|Jessica
Ching-Sze Wang]]'s distinctive middle name, attached to her 2005
Dewey-in-China scholarship — returns a hit on **page 278**. Queries for
"Barry Keenan," "Behuniak," and "Benjamin Schwartz" each returned no page
hit, defaulting instead to Google Books' generic "Front Cover" landing
view — the tool's behavior when a search term is not found anywhere in
its index of the scanned text. Per
[[claim-stroud-2023-book-back-matter-is-notes-then-index-no-standalone-bibliography]],
the book's 312-page length and table of contents place pages 278-279
inside the "Notes" section, consistent with an endnote citing Wang's work
near a mention of Hu Shih.

This is page-hit evidence, not a verbatim quote: Google Books' static
response to a non-interactive fetch reports only the page number, not the
snippet text, so the exact wording on pp. 278-279 is
`[unverified-quote — needs direct read]`. It is also not proof of absence
for the three negative queries — search-inside coverage is not guaranteed
complete, and a citation could use different phrasing (an initial, a
title-only reference) an exact-phrase query would miss. What the evidence
supports at its actual tier: a positive, page-located signal for Wang and
a negative signal for the other three named scholars — suggestive
corroboration that the book cites at least some China-side Dewey
scholarship, and Wang specifically, but not a confirmed bibliographic
