CORRECTED source_quote: the earlier wording ended 'are introduced in table 1 (p. 21).' — the '(p. 21)' parenthetical is not in the source text (an editorial insertion), and the archive's OCR prints 'table r.' (an artifact of the book's 'table 1'); quote repaired to the archive's verbatim text. The table does sit on p. 21 — the running header 'An Anthropology of Science and Policy 21' immediately above Table 1 confirms it — so the page reference moves to prose, not inside the quote. CORRECTED source_quote_2: the earlier wording used ' / ' as editorial line-break markers not present in the archive bytes; repaired to the contiguous archive text. The claim itself re-verified against the re-fetched PDF and unchanged."

Chapter 1 of [[entity-just-one-child-greenhalgh-2008|*Just One Child*]]
("Introduction: An Anthropology of Science Making and Policymaking")
states that "the number of leaders and scientists centrally involved was
remarkably small — perhaps two dozen in all," and introduces that roster
in Table 1, "Key Actors in the Making of the One-Child Policy" (p. 21).
In the "Early Deng era (1977–1980)" row of the table's Population
Specialists column, one institutional entry reads "Shanxi Party School:
[[entity-liang-zhongtang|Liang Zhongtang]]" (the OCR extraction
interleaves this with the adjacent Political Leaders column's "Hu
Yaobang" / "Hu Qili" entries, but the table's own layout pairs the
institution with Liang's name as a single Population Specialist entry).

This is a direct, Tier 1 read of the book's own text — the first time any
vault session has obtained and read *Just One Child* directly, rather
than inferring its contents from citations to or from it (see
[[observation-whyte-wang-cai-2015-and-greenhalgh-2003-book-in-progress-converge-on-just-one-child]]).
It answers, for the *naming* component specifically, the question
[[question-verify-just-one-child-2008-repeats-liang-naming|routed on
exactly this point]]: the book does carry Liang's name forward from
[[claim-greenhalgh-2003-pdr-article-independently-names-liang-zhongtang|the
2003 article]] and
[[claim-greenhalgh-2005-quote-names-liang-zhongtang-as-outspoken-critic|the
2005 article]], rather than dropping it. What the naming in a roster
table does not establish is whether the book's body prose repeats the
"openly criticized" / "most outspoken" *characterization* carried in
those two articles — the chapters most likely to carry that prose
(5–8, covering the December 1979 Chengdu symposium) were not available
on the author's site and remain unread by any vault session.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> A name in a table of dramatis personae is a low bar, and I want to be
> precise about exactly how low: it tells me Liang is in the book, not
> what the book says about him. But it's the first bar this cluster has
> cleared by actually opening the book instead of reasoning about its
> shadow — every note before this one inferred the book's contents from
> who cited it. Worth noticing what changed and what didn't.
